"The Sharks are on Marian Hossa's short list, a list that also includes the Rangers, Penguins and Red Wings, a source reports. If San Jose adds Hossa, who is believed seeking between $7.5-8M per, they will intensify their efforts to deal Jonathan Cheechoo, who was dangled at the draft. The Blueshirts will be all ears."
Even if Hossa goes to the Sharks, I would be fine trading a first rounder for Cheechoo. Hes a good high scoring winger who we could use. And would help us on a more short term basis if we only sign him for 2-3 years.
what are your thoughts? The article said the Sharks would likely deal out CheeChoo if they obtained Hossa.
You won't get Cheechoo for anything close to a 1st round pick, especially if you are a contending team with late-round picks like the Rangers.
Cheechoo is 27yo and signed through 2010/2011 with a cap number of just $3m. That's an absolute steal for a 30g scorer. To get him on the Rangers, you would probably have to give up Dubinsky+.
The question is, is Cheechoo as successful playing along side Gomez as he was with Thornton? Two great puck dishers, no doubt, but two very different styles at pivot. I'm not sure on this one.

It seems Cheechoo has/had more success finding the back of the net when Thornton first came to SJ, as Big Joe was adjusting to the Sharks style of play. A lot more transitional hockey, end-to-end type stuff while scoring on the rush. That's Gomez's style in a nutshell really.
No on Cheechoo. I really don't think he's an elite winger.
If the guy didn't get injured this season and wasn't coming off hernia surgery to start the year, he no doubt puts up 35+ goals, as he did the year before, and the year before that. Sure, he isn't a Kovalchuk or a Gaborik, but thats okay because he isn't getting paid like a superstar either.
3 mil for the next 3 years is the steal of the century for a guy who can pot 35+ goals.
If the Sharks dont want him and they have Thornton to set him up, and he only makes 3 million, theres something wrong there.
Too much will be given up.
Oh come on. The guy scores 56 goals in his 3rd year in the NHL and they give him a 3 mil per year deal. We did the same thing with Prucha after he had his first 2 seasons and he scored half as many goals, for half the salary of Cheechoo. They were just dumb/smart enough to lock him up long-term.
Besides, this was all started in the event that HOSSA winds up in San Jose and they have no room for Cheechoo anymore.

Hey, if they are giving him away i'll take him, but realistically i think the price will be too stiff.
Wow, is Cheechoo really only making 3 mil? I really thought his contract was worse than that.
He's not a true superstar in the sense that I don't think he can create for himself the way Ovechkin/Malkin/etc can, but man, the guy's absolutely an elite sniper.
His value's somewhat down at the moment. I would certainly love to see him on Gomez's wing
Assuming the Sharks do sign Hossa, I wonder if you could do a deal around Prucha (plus, say, Moore and a 3rd) for Cheechoo. Two wingers with declining numbers looking for new starts change places and the Sharks free up some of the space they need to clear in order to sign Marian.
Are the Sharks looking to replace Campbell at all? Why not package Rosie in a deal for Cheechoo? I'm not a huge Cheech fan, but I really think Rosie is headed out the door.

I think if we play it right, we could get Cheechoo AND Murray coming back. Then people can stop pining over Orpik finally.
