Wow, I like Cole, but Pitkanen...

I enjoyed his short period here, even if it wasn't his best season. Happy he's in a market like Carolina where even if he does become a star defenseman, we won't really notice.

Funny timing, I was just nervously checking what the compensation brackets where for RFA's. I guess we don't have to worry about it anymore.

I'm shocked that Pitkanens value is so low. He really must have character issues (at least from the Oils perspective).
Its also kinda clear that all the NHL GM's have blackballed Lowe too.
Your leaps of logic are stunning. All the NHL GMs? Except for, you know, the 4 different ones we've made trades with in the last month?

loves Pitkanen but if Cole can stay healthy he is going to wreck ass on home ice. i love the reckless factor but he has to stay healthy. but if this takes them out of the Hossa angle, ouch. Stauffer says no.

Frankly it is because most of us overvalue Pitkanen.

Why? It's been known that Lowe has coveted Cole for years.

Pitkanen's value is probably "so low" because of his apparent lack of desire.

Maybe Hossa considers us a contender with Cole and Lubo on the team?

I don't agree about the "blackballed" part, but it's hard not to wonder when something like this happens.

I've noticed that too. Maybe because we saw Joni a ton last season and they didn't?

If there are no more moves to be made, I won't be too happy with this off season.

To other teams Pitkanen is an over rated headcase... I guess we just saw firsthand what he could do this year though.

I like the trade if it means we can bring someone else in via free agency... but overall I'm disappointed. That being said, it's far from the worst trade we've ever made. The return is decent.

This is not a bad trade. You guys over rated PIts, he is hard to deal with and came off a bad year. Cole is a good trade off. I think we got the better deal in the whole picture.

That's because (and I know I'll be crucified for this) Pitkanen is vastly overrated on these boards and given a free pass because of his potential.

Well, Cole to me is a very similar guy to Ryan Smyth, so I think we will appreciate his skill and toughness.

It wasn't in my wheelhouse of deals that I wanted to see....but Cole is a legit top 6 guy in this league...his $4 million isn't bad.

Don't know where we are cap wise but I would imagine if we sign Glencross we are pretty much done.

Cole Horcoff Hemsky
Penner Gagner Nilsson
Moreau Cogliano Pisani
Glencross Brodziak Stortini
Pouliot Schremp (First call up) maybe Marty Sakic for the PB?

Visnovsky Souray
Gilbert Grebeshkov
Staios Smid
Roy

Garon
Roloson

I guess that is good enough to run into camp with.

on a ppg basis, Eric cole is 18-20 in the NHL for LW. He does add a physical dimension to his game that others in that range do not (brunette, Tanguay, naslund + Whitney). The closest comparable to his style and production last year is Dustin brown.

Both players are highly underrated league wide. Joni Pitkanen is a soft defenseman who can't play defense and Erik Cole is a walking injury that has no scoring touch.

I'm telling you guys in Edmonton..... you're going to love Erik Cole. Treat him well.

Stupid question here...

Can Joni still have offer sheets thrown his way? I'm thinking yes? Friend and I aren't quite sure how it works.

Bingo. If Pitkanen was all that, he'd have the big contract and not Gilbert.

EDIT: I still don't get Lowe's thinking here with Cole being a UFA next year. If Cole doesn't resign, LOwe eseentially gave up an asset for one year of another.

I dunno. I'll miss Pitkanen, but i have and odd feeling he'll never pan out to the expectations that everyone seems to put on him.

As for Cole, he replaces Torres, but he's everything that Torres does if not better.

We needed Grit , now we got it.

Its a sad day indeed when for something so obvious one still has to put out the sign.

I don't overvalue Pitkanen, and I think this a bad deal. Even the rumors had Cole+ for Pitkanen. Unless there is a pretty damn good "plus" that hasn't been revealed yet, this is a bad trade.

Brutal deal. Just god awful. We should have held onto Pitkanen rather then trade him for Cole.

I hate this deal. I'm very disappointed in Lowe right now.

Cole is 29, in his prime, and a proven goal scorer...

2001-02 Carolina Hurricanes NHL 81 16 24 40 35 23 6 3 9 30
2002-03 Carolina Hurricanes NHL 53 14 13 27 72 -- -- -- -- --
2003-04 Carolina Hurricanes NHL 80 18 24 42 93 -- -- -- -- --
2004-05 Berlin Polar Bears DEL 39 6 21 27 76 8 5 1 6 37
2005-06 Carolina Hurricanes NHL 60 30 29 59 54 2 0 0 0 0
2006-07 Carolina Hurricanes NHL 71 29 32 61 76 -- -- -- -- --
2007-08 Carolina Hurricanes NHL 73 22 29 51 76 -- -- -- -- --
NHL Totals 418 129 151 280 406 25 6 3 9 30

If he can stay healthy, I see no reason to dislike him. We need the toughness, badly, and Joni's going to be a headache for whoever tries to re-sign him long-term.

Maybe this moves Penner down to the second-line to feast on easier minutes and PP time.

I'm satisfied with this. Cole will be very exciting to watch this year.
