This is actually not as bad as the Oilers offersheet to Vanek or Penner. Those were total overpayments, this is more reasonable.

Don't you think it should take an overpayment to sign an RFA? It just seems like a gag offer sheet, something to let the Canucks fanbase know that they are trying.

If you're going to make an offer sheet you want it so the other team can't/won't match it. This was so reasonable it was a no-brainer it would be matched. What was the point? To piss GM's off? Or is Gillis desperate?
I dunno, if you were looking for a guy that can play the RW and get about 20 goals while playing a physical game, why not try for Tucker, instead of making an offer to an RFA that was going to be matched? Maybe Gillis did try for Tucker, I dunno...this whole thing just has me baffled. Am I missing something?

True. That's why this is somewhat of an odd signing since everyone knew Blues would match. It seems that they're planning on targeting someone else, either another Blues player or someone whom the Blues are also after. I'm glad that they didn't resort to an overpayment though.

I'd be surprised if they went after anyone else, but Shaone Morrisonn (washington) would be worth considering @$2.5mm per.......assuming Gillis wants to continue on down this road.

I don't know where that came from, I've never heard of it. You have to have your draft picks available to make an offer, and that's the limiting factor.

How does it handicap the canucks? They can still give a 1st+3rd RFA offer if they like.
They can still make nearly $17+ mil in UFA offers and be under the cap...without even touching the 10% allowance.
It was a simple move that could have paid of. A team with tight budget targetted and if Strickland is correct a team that will end up having to move salary to keep its budget.

There was either a miscalculation or bad intel (Mellanby). Why send out offer sheets that are going to be matched a couple hours later. That shows how much of a no brainer this one was. If it's just throwing enough sh** on the wall in the hopes something sticks, that seems like a pretty half-assed approach.

As Gord Miller mentioned, our 2nd round pick would be tied up for 7 days so we wouldnt be able to make another RFA offer sheet that involves our 2 until a decision is made.

In a way, Gillis' attempt at getting Backes is a commentary on our scouting/drafting.
Backes was selected 62nd in the 2003 draft by St Louis. The Canucks had the number 60 spot, and used it to select Marc-Andre Bernier. So, they got a guy they want to keep, we got a career ECHLer.
What a complete waste of time. Not only that, we've alienated St. Louis in future trades/transactions. And we've had some great trades with them in the past.
