Wouldn't surprise me if it was a back-up plan.

Great small signing
Well, he's certainly not underpaid anymore. But, this is a good depth signing.

How many bottom 6 forwards do we have now?

Wellwood, Pyatt, Pettinger, Burrows, Hordichuk, Kesler, Johnson, Cowan, Rypien
The way I see it, if Wellwood plays it wont be on the bottom 2 lines. Rypien will be back in Manitoba, and Cowan will either finish the last line or be put on waivers. I think the bottom six will look a little like this

Burrows Kesler Pyatt/Pettinger
Hordichuk Johnson Pyatt/Pettinger

Pretty damn good defensive bottom 6 if you ask me.

Limited offense though. Still, a great PK'er and he'll more than likely earn every penny of his paycheck.
That's all I need to hear. Although it's interesting considering we have two very good PKers in Kesler and Burrows already. Guess you can never have too many.

Along with the likes of Wellwood, Cowan, Hansen, Rypien, Brown.

I said it before, but I suspect that the Canucks are dangling one of these forwards for an asset.
I agree. I'm thinking Cowan might be waived. Maybe Pyatt traded for a pick?

Guys, could you please stop pencilling in Wellwood as a bottom 6 player? It's either top 6 role or pressbox. The guy is useless in any other capacity...I'm sure Gillis and AV recognize this.

Seems possible, or at least his backup plan.

That's the guy. Great shot blocker, pk'er and faceoff guy.

This certainly helps our PK get back to when Josh Green was here. If Sundin signs we'll probably have the best FO% in the league.

I like this signing, although it doesn't address our scoring. On the bright side, I like the fact that Gillis is at least making everything OUTSIDE of our scoring start to look pitch perfect.

Raymond - Sundin (?) - ???
Sedin - Sedin - Pyatt
Burrows - Kesler - Hansen
Hordichuk - Johnson - Pettinger

Ohlund - Salo
Mitchell - Bieksa
Edler - Krajicek

Luongo
???

So that's a fantastic 3rd/4th line, 6-man d-core, goaltending, along with the Sedins, and a good shot at Sundin, with about 5 million to spend on the Sundin winger and a backup.

No, we have an abundance of crappy 3rd and 4th liners. That's why we had to settle for the likes of Byron Ritchie and Brad Isbister through much of last season. These guys are actually decent players that fill holes our other pluggers simply didn't fill. We've been needing a good shot blocker for a while now, and our PK can always use an upgrade.

And that's fine, like I said I would have preferred Gratton. Not nearly as fast, but bigger.

Anyway, this team now is FULL of players who can play bottom 6 roles :

Kesler
Burrows
Pettinger
Brown
Cowan
Rypien?
Hansen
Johnson
Hordichuk

You might even include Pyatt on that list..

Yeah, if Gillis only had an offer out there to make someone the highest paid player in the league, then things would get interesting.

What do you want the guy to do? Maybe he could get Quinn to work his magic and give Sundin a nice 3 am wakeup call.

Haha. I was just going to post I hope Vancouver doesn't call Sundin in the middle of the night.

If your looking for a goal scorer, You got the wrong guy in R.J. but other than that, he is very good at what he does.

We have an abundance of low quality 3rd/4th liners but with the additions of Hordichuk and Johnson our bottom 6 looks like this:

Burrows-Kesler-Pettinger
Hordichuk-Johnson-()

That is an above-average bottom 6 with each player possessing the elements of speed, grit, and competitiveness.

I think Pyatt will be on his way out because he doesn't bode well with Canucks roster moving forward.

So, Question........

(and I am not making any comments about who will play where, what the lines should be, etc., just asking)

Does this leave us with the following potential lines at the moment:

Sedin - Sedin - ???
Raymond - Wellwood - ???
Burrows - Kesler - Pyatt
Hordichuk - Johnson - Pettinger
Spare: Rypien

If so, are we to assume that Isbister and Ritchie (edit: already gone) are leaving, and

Brown, Shannon, Cowan, Hansen, Grabner, Simek, Bliznak, Gendur, Jaffray, and Labrie will be in Manitoba this year? Did I miss anybody?

Any insight is appreciated, cheers!

Wellwood is going to be a top-6 player and thats according to Gillis.

I'm probably being just a stubborn Canuck fan, I guess I should be a little optimistic, but the fact of the matter is we have pretty decent amount of 3rd/4th liners in our system, Hansen, Brown, Shannon, etc, I don't really consider them crappy players.

Ritchie has already signed overseas (can't remember the team). Raymond is a LW. Brown or Hansen might be kept as a 13th forward, I'm thinking.

Agree 100% With our D and Louie we will be stingy, correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't our major downfall last year lack of scoring? This team still will lose more 2-1 games than it will win. Are we to assume we already have 4 of our top 6 forwards (Sedin-Sedin-Raymond-Wellwood)? That is sad unless we got both Sundin & Hossa, which we won't.

I am worried...

Sedin-Sedin-?
Raymond-Wellwood-?

Gross

Well thats it boys.

You may as well hand us the cup.

All jokes aside, I like this move. Our PK last season was brutal, an upgrade on Ritchie who could never get the ****ing puck outta the zone.

Holy crap! I called this (the acquisition) a long time ago. I think he's the perfect 4th line centre. I really like this. Perfect guy for what was needed.
