Opinions After Day 1 of the UFA Season...(merged)

Probably should sticky this thread....

Have to be patient. There are many angles to consider and the Cap makes things tough.

Creativity within the Frenzy is the answer. And it may take a little time.

NY Rangers have a competitive team, respected coaching staff, awesome facilities and a great hometown for many players.

Plenty of time left. Plenty of great players in the NHL.

Have Faith!

Now all they need is a few guys who can put the puck in the net.

Rate the Rangers FA Signings

I'm going to start with the good, go to the bad, then the ugly:

Aaron Voros - A
This is a very underrated signing. Rarely do you get a 6'3 player who can skate and score and play physical for $1 a season, and he is still very young! I have seen him play and he can put up better numbers than last season...40 points a season is very possible for him. A Great replacement for Avery if we cant sign him.
Patrick Rissmiller - B
Good signing since Rissmiller is still an improvement Hollweg
Valliquete - B
Very good backup, I like it.

Now to the bad and the ugly:
Redden - big overpayment. He is 31 and so I dont see the need for such a long...he will be 37 when the contract is over! $6.5 mill is just silly. That is almost what Campbell got but at least Campbell gets a lot of points each season. The last 2 seasons Redden had under 40 points, that is NOT worth $6.5 mill.
Rozsival - this is the ugly. You would think management would learn from his playoff performance, where he took like 3 penalties in one key game against Pitt and just looked like a minor league player in some playoff games! He is not worth $3 mill a season, let alone $5. It is a huge mistake that the Rangers will regret later on.

What bothers me the most about the D signings is that we have guys like Sanguinetti, Del Zotto, Potter, etc, all great prospects who are not far from the NHL. What was the need to sign 2 dmen around 30 years of age to such long deals? Havent we learned from signing other over the hill dmen like Malik, like ULANOV, like LEFEBRE! If you make a stupid move once, fine, if you make it again..that is just arrogance.

I unfortunately think you're right on the money with this one. Dubinsky is hands down the Rangers most valuable asset, yes, I think he is more coveted league-wide than Staal right now. I really think we will see him packaged for a young scoring winger of some sort. Let's pray it's a good deal.

But to take the opposite viewpoint...we just lost Jagr/Straka/Shanny/Avery. So we upgraded our defense, but lost 76 goals. So while we had a pathetic offensive output of 205 goals (bad enough for 25th in the league), we managed to lose the players who accounted for 37% of our scoring.

So down the line when Redden is getting 30 points a season and Rozsival is getting 25 points a season and they are both a minus while earning over $5 mill each, you are going to be happy? When Sanguinetti is ready this year or next yet has no room to play you are going to be happy? When Del Zotto is ready and again has no room to play, thats good right?

Rozy will no longer be the number one guy. If you think he wouldn't have received 5 mill in this market then your misinformed. He's played well as our top defender for the past 3 years (even though he shouldn't have had to) and he knows our system. I can't really complain about him, at times he played like the 2nd pairing d-man he is but at others he entirely raised his game. The Rangers don't enjoy the success they have recently without him.

As for the prospects, well they are just that, prospects. Sangs is still at the minimum a year away and Del Zotto is 4 years. And they've all yet to prove anything at the NHL level. So unless you planned on paying 2-3 mill for garbage d-men and tanking the season bringing back Rozy and adding Redden really aren't poor options.

first off there is Room for Sangs... if he is ready this year we can waive Backman... next year Backman probably won't be resigned so there is a spot available. Del Zotto is probably 3-4 yrs away... it almost coincides w/ when Rosy's contract will be up.

also who knows what trades will be made over the next 2-4 yrs... both Tyutin and girardi could get traded... there could be a major injury to somebody ending a career... bottom line is we needed dmen now. That is what it took to get them. It is never a bad thing having too many dmen. We can always buy out contracts later, make trades or just banish them to the AHL.

So even if the Rangers don't make any more moves, we just subtract 76 goals and we can't add in any? I would guess whoever replaces all of those minutes is good for at least a few goals.

anyone know the timing of Redden's signing and Cole's trade?

is it possible that sather expected to swing one of Girardi/Tyutin for Cole, so he went ahead and got Redden, only for the Carolina trade to fall through?

I don't see our options, and it's scaring me.

Didn't you know that this team will go absolutely nowhere unless we get Jagr back?

As far as I know, the Redden signing went down long after the Cole deal did. Almost 5 hours, at least in the reporting time line.

I think Slats will give Jagr one or two more days to decide what he's doing before he makes a move. But when he does, it will make sense.

Plenty of options, and those are just UFA's. NHL is full of talented forwards waiting to be traded to the NY Rangers

okay, so take out unrealistic, expensive forwards and scrubs who don't do anything for our scoring winger problem...that leaves us with Naslund and Avery.

I actually wouldn't mind those two

Glen's biggest recent trade was Backman for a fourth. If you think the ****in sloth is going to make an effort to stand on his feet and take the cigar out of his mouth to make a trade you're kidding yourself..

Your a glass half empty kind of guy huh?

See I look at all of them for what they are. Assets in play.

You have NO IDEA what Redden or Roszival will do in the future. The Prospects may never reach the big team. And when they mature thay could be more valuable as assets to trade for other pieces down the line.

You have to be patient and not get to emotional when the business is involved.

Look at it like this.

The Rangers have Staal, Girardi, Tyutin, Backman signed. They are missing a vet presence in that group. They are likely fine with an up and comer being the 7th man but they need a Vet presence on the Blueline.

Who's available:

Redden, Campbell, Roszival, Blake, Orpik, Commodore, Streit

Pick one? Sather got 2
