Zipay is saying Dallas is the frontrunner for Avery and is willing to pay for him too.

5. After deadline, we heard the front runner for Avery is Dallas, which has plenty of dough and is willing to go over $4 mil for 4.

Let me put it nicely.

Any team with Callahan as a top 6 forward is in trouble.

Now I'm not saying all the moves are perfect, but i don't presume to know what's going on in sather's head. who knows what other negotiations are going on. maybe we were close on signing some other players, like rolston, maybe some other teams out there were offering redden similar money, like dallas and san jose.

all will be revealed by opening night
Wrong.

The defense was fine last year. A slight upgrade would have sufficed.

The offense last year was not potent, not in the least. And right now it is WORSE.

I said this many many many times, the OFFENSE needed more fixing then the defense. The Rangers defense was their BEST attribute last year. Their offense was HORRIBLE.

Overpaying for Redden was a bad move.

It's funny...we have two winning organizations bidding for Avery in Detriot and Dallas...Meanwhile the Rangers don't see the value in Avery......

Is Avery worth $4M a year?

probably not, but the Rangers could've signed him for maybe half that number last offseason....

My plan for today is to sign Jagr AND another forward....THAN I'd look to make a trade to round out the offseason...

i agree....although going alon with the trade, i think tyutin will be going so i would then sign another defenseman to fill his spot for the next couple of years

What type of contract are players like Satan/Demitra/Fedetenko/Nagy looking for?

I think signing Satan, and playing him on a line with gomez and prucha would be a pretty solid line. Satan has a knack for scoring from basically any angle on the ice.

You've obviously never watched Marian Hossa in your life.

He's VERY solid defensively when he doesn't have the puck. He wins the battles along the boards, and is usually a top PK guy on his team.

My plan?

Trade for Cheechoo and Murray

Sign Kristian Huselius

top two lines:

Dawes (20g) - Gomez (15g) - Cheechoo (35g)
Prucha (25g) - Drury (25g) - Huselius (28g)

I wonder what Naslund is looking for. Obviously not the ideal guy, certainly on the downswing of his career. But if he's looking for less than $4m for 1 year, he would be a viable option.

Is Antoine Vermette on the trading block?

And realistically, what would it take to get him?

I would love to have Vermette.

WITHOUT giving up Cherepanov, Dubinsky, Anisimov, Grachev, Stepan, Sanguinetti, Del Zotto, Staal...

I would target Naslund as well. He's past his prime, but he can still pot 25-30 goals playing with someone like Gomez. He'll also probably take a bit less than some other UFA's because of his big decline in recent years

Sign him to a 2 year contract so we at least have one legitimate winger on our top two lines. The way things are shaping up we are going to score 150 goals next season

IMO when your top line wingers are declining one year contract guys, you aren't a SC contender. Heck, you may be a borderline playoff team. Sather needs to do something more strategic than simply sign a couple of graying fill-ins (looking more and more like this means a trade) - or we should just give it to the kids and see what happens (whether that be an unexpected blossoming or a trip to the Tavares sweepstakes).

I mean, think about it: compare the Shanny signing last year to signing Naslund for one year this year. The Shanny deal last year certainly sounded better to me at the time than Naslund would now -- and we all know how that turned out.

Speaking of which, I just had a HORRIBLE thought. What if Sather's backup plan is to sign Shanny to an INCREASED role this year and that's why he asked him to hold off while we see how the first couple of days of FA play out...

Probably Tyutin straight up or Girardi + low pick. They're dying for defense over there.

Love Vermettes game, been preaching him for a while. Not to mention, if we're relying on winning games 2-1, 1-0, etc, we're gonna need a guy who is nasty in the shootout. He definitely is that guy.

If it came down to Girardi orTyutin being moved, i like Tyutin's game more.

Yes, Girardi has more offensive upside, but Tyutin hits people. And i love it when he lays out people with his hip checks.

I'd move Callahan and Girardi for Antoine Vermette. And then sign Huselius and Jagr.

Here is what i would like now.

Antoine Vermette
Maxim Afinogenov (only one year left on his contract) or not
Christian Huselius
Jaromir Jagr

And if at all possible, Mara.

Trade Prucha, Callahan, Girardi, Jessiman, and some B prospects like Pyatt, who may not have a future with us anyway.

Vermette - Gomez - Drury
Huselius - Dubinsky - Jagr
Dawes - Anisimov - Afinogenov
Korpikoski - Betts - Sjostrom

Staal - Redden
Rozsival - Sanguinetti
Tyutin - Mara

Lundqvist
Valiquette

or

Vermette - Gomez - Drury
Huselius - Dubinsky - Jagr
Dawes - Anisimov - Korpikoski
Parenteu - Betts - Sjostrom

Staal - Redden
Rozsival - Sanguinetti
Tyutin - Mara

Lundqvist
Valiquette

But there is no reason to believe Sather is smart enough to make anything like that happen.
