You beat me to it

With Auld, Valiquette and Lalime all gone now (they wanted to know they would get games played) Sanford makes the most sense. Not an upgrade but you know what - he didn't suck either.

With McIntyre going to Nashville we now need a veteran to play with Schneider on the farm...unless they are going with Ellis and Schneider down there - which I doubt

Huh, didn't quite expect that, but I guess after all the goalie signings yesterday, our hands were kind of tied. No break for Lou.

Kind of surprised. Thought Sanford might want to try another team where he'd have a better chance of starting. He did a great job last year IMO.

Sanford is a decent goaltender. He just seemed to need a bit more playing time to 'get in a groove' he's probably going to get that this season so it's seems like another calculated risk from Gillis. Why overpay for something that may or may not be better. Like it or not, Sanford is one of the better options out there to back-up Luongo. Nice signing.

I was interested in seeing Valiquette in the role (if it was comparable dollars), but I'm fine with Sanford. Looks like we'll see Luongo 70+ times again this season, however.

This is good, Sanford is a decent backup. Hopefully Vigneault will be forward-thinking enough to throw Sandford into some more mid-season games (especially in January/February) so that the reigns can be fully handed to Luongo leading into the post-season without so much fatigue-worry.

I'm curious why? What other option do we have at that price for a guy to play maybe 10-12 games?

I think Sanford was the best option.

Strickland just confirmed the amount: 1 year deal worth $650,000.

Lou was never going to get a rest anyways. He's a 70 game goaltender.

Pretty much a no-brainer once McIntyre went to Nashville.

$1,000,000 seemed to be the going price for the 20-30 backup game goalies. $650,000 on our backup seems fine, since he won't play much.

Though this seems like Luongo will have to play 70+ games now, though.

Sanford was ok for us, and really, the backup goalie position is the last of my worries. I am more happy we got someone with NHL experience in net rather than taking a chance on Drew Mac like some people wanted.

Is it? I dunno, I was just going with what the quoted price was. Regardless, my point remains, league minimum on our backup is fine!

At the very least, Gillis prevented CuSan from going to another Western team and stoning the Canucks repeatedly, as Sanford was doing a few years ago...

I'm surprised at this signing, and especially surprised about alot of your reactions. In my mind, Sanford did a GREAT job for a 10 game backup, and was expected to leave for sure because no half-decent goalie in their right mind would stay much longer than a year behind Luongo. I figured Sanford would leave for a better chance, and that we would have to settle for guys like Valiquette (if we lucked out), Auld, and some other backups who are farr worse. I don't see Sanford as a huge (if any) downgrade on any of these guys, and would rather see him here than Auld.

The reaction's messed up, IMO, we should be lucky and surprised. It's not like Luongo played 70 games because Sanford was an incompetent goalie. What, were we expecting two starters?

My concern at the signing is due to AV's reluctance to play Sanford, thus forcing Luongo into playing a crapload of games again.

I thought Sanford did fine for a backup, didn't win us any games, didn't lose us any games we should have won, but played good enough, which is all you can expect from a backup.

Looks as if Baumer is back as well. If you go nhl.com and look at our team, Baumgartner is on the list. This is the same way in which the Hordichuk deal was broken.

Good signing. He played well last year when called upon. I think he'll be getting a little more action this year, although not much. Price is right too.

I hope Baumgartner is a two-way deal, but I would not be shocked otherwise.

He's a player who's best asset is his right-side point shot. Valuable depth should the Canucks decide to trade Bieksa.

His rights were transferred to Manitoba for their playoff run. The more I think about it, the more I suspect he's been signed for the farm.
