The magic number for Mara was around 3.5, and by giving Rozi 5mil, Sather blew it. I'm eager to see the difference Redden makes, but I think its safe to say that this will be a much different team without Mara.

I have no idea why anyone would think that Mara meant anything at all to this team... He was a big guy who didn't play physical at all. Occasional hug here and there. His shot proved to provide little and he doesn't have the athleticism to do anything on the powerplay.

A guy I would take over Backman without a doubt however.

No way does he get 3.5 mill.

You guys crack me up. All this Mara love is such crap. He sucked for us, BIG TIME. He couldn't keep the puck in the zone on the point, he wasn't that physical, and was a non-factor after coming back in Feb/March.

The only reason he's getting any positive comments is due to the contracts we signed. If we resigned Mara for $4MM this place would be going ballistic.

Ya know he's bad when the best they can come up with is 'well, i'd rather have him than Backman/Malik/whoever the current hate is being directed towards'.

yeah I believe those signings have to do with pushing hollweg off the 4th line, which I am ecstatic about.

And I am one (of the few?) who would rather play Bäckman than Mara. No, not because he's a Swede , but because Bäckman was actually more physical than Mara, a better skater, better positionally and added pinches and support in the offensive zone. Along with that, Bäckman showed a pretty accurate sneaky wristshot, which made alot more damage during a third of a season than Mara's slapper all seasons in Rangers added together.

Sure, Bäckman took some unnecessary penalties and made some mistakes, but he made up for it - and kept being physical. Remember when he scored right away after he had cost us a goal - which was a very nice display of Gionta by the way to volley down the clear out the zone?

I just can't see what Mara did for us that was so wonderful. He was awful offensively (which apparently was his strength some seasons ago) and nothing special defensively.

I think Backman showed more potential upside than Mara. I'm curious to see what a full season, proper training camp (learning the system, etc.) would do for his play, and more importantly, his confidence.
I think he's got the physical skills, but the mental game is a question mark.

I was hoping to have Mara back. For some reason I've always liked him and was excited to see him play with a bit of a snarl late in the season and in the playoffs. Adding him into the mix now would create a formidable defense.

Redden/Staal
Rozsival/Mara
Tyutin/Giradi

Although it doesn't seem to likely considering the Cap situation.

EDIT: Now with Tyutin and Backman gone might this mean Mara has a chance to come back now? I hope so...

With Tyutin and Backman gone I think this may open the door for Mara to come back on a one year, $2.5m deal. At least I hope so.

I hope so too. I've always been a big Mara fan but I especially liked what he showed us in the playoffs. I think at a reasonable salary having him back would be fantastic.

with the market so out of whack right now i think Mara could get more but man have i been wrong about what the rangers plans are.....

i think sathes plan on defense is to wait out first wave of free agents and see what's leftover on defense....maybe mara ends up being that guy if he's unsigned for the next few weeks...

I'm not a Mara fan but I think he could get more money and more icetime signing somewhere else.

I want him back. He would be great to round out our new defense corps and he would probably be half of his $3 million salary from last year. He was physical and stood up for teammates. BRING HIM BACK SLATS!

No thanks. I'm ready for some Kids to step in and play the game. This guy couldn't hit the net for his life.

Well jeez, if I knew we were signing defensemen based on their shot accuracy instead of any other important skill I would have advocated getting rid of him a while ago. Not like we need his physicality or actual defensive presence or anything right?

I understand everybody wants to rush the kids along but it's not useful if we don't need them too. Sangs in particular could use some time in the AHL to build confidence if not skill; bringing him up to get pelted versus re-signing a proven guy just makes no sense unless Sangs busts out of camp like a bat out of hell. Unfortunately we can't know that yet, so I think it's smart to re-sign Mara.

Sounds to me like he's coming back.

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/ho...naslund_j.html

Quote:
Of course, that was Sather merely being courteous to a player he likes and respects - just as when he told Brendan Shanahan yesterday that the door had not closed on him. Yesterday's signings - and the one-year deal to bring back defenseman Paul Mara that was being hammered out last night - left the Rangers with no room under the salary cap.
BTW, since this is an article for tomorrow's paper, "yesterday's signings" mean Naslund and Kalinin and "last night" means tonight.
