The Rangers will still be looking for defensemen, via trade or free agent signing, although it looks as if Paul Mara is not part of our future.

Quote:
Sather also said the team isn’t done looking for defensemen, either through trades or free agency. It doesn’t sound like Paul Mara is part of their future.

Um
What about this squad ??:

Prucha Dubinsky Jagr
Dawes Gomez Zherdev
Fritsche Drury Sjöström/Callahan
Rissmiller Betts Orr/Voros
Jämtin

Redden Staal
Rozie Girardi
Hutch Murray
Pock

Hank
Vally

Trades
Callahan or Sjöström + a 4th for Doug Murray in San jose
Hollweg for a bag of pucks

Signings
Sign Jagr for some 6,500 + incentives
Sign Hutchinsson
Resign Dawes
Resign Sjöström

Bring up Pock or Potter or whoever wins out in camp

Publish numbers for Vally, Jämtin, Rissmiller

Would barely squeeze under the cap
**Interesting team

I was also on that conference call with Glen Sather and it sounded like he did not think that Jagr would be coming back. Although all hope was not lost, Sather did not sound optimistic.

(Sather) On the next moves: "We still have plenty of cap room left, we knew that when we signed Redden and Rozsival, we knew there was a possibility that we'd have to move somebody. The four defensemen who are left are all capable of playing 30 minutes each, but we're still going to sign some defensemen and we're still exploring all those routes not just from free agency but from trades. When you sign two players like that, they can both log a lot of ice time, it's just the way the economics of the game work; you can't have a pile of guys making an awful lot of money, but we want to have people who can move the puck and skate with the puck. There's still a lot going on out there."

I'm sure another deal or two is forthcoming. We have at least a half dozen 3rd line guys and some of them will need to be moved. So I could see a couple going for another top 6 forward...and maybe another 1 for a bottom pairing dman.

With the addition of Fritsche, it certainly seems possible that Dubinsky is expendable for a guy like....say Bouwmeester?

Dubinsky>>>Fritsche

i dont understand how an on and off injured centre makes Dubinsky expandable.

Because despite him being overrated, he's still very, very good, and would easily be our best defensman. It's irrelevant though, as there's not a shot in hell we can get him.

Sorry.. did you just say Jaybo is overrated?

That being said, I don't think we need another 6 million dollar d-man.

Id have to seriously think about pulling the trigger on that.

A core of J-Bo, Staal, Redden, and Roszival is a top 3 defense in this league for years to come.

If Sangs isn't ready this year (and I doubt he is, at least initially) we need to sign another dman...whether it is Hutchinson or someone else, we definitely need at least one more.

I think it is very likely that one/some of: Prucha, Cally, Korpikoski, etc. could be dealt for another defenseman.

I could see a Demitra or Naslund signing, and some of our 3rd/4th line players for a decent defenseman trade happen tonight or tomorrow.

why make another trade?? He's overhauled the team enough, why not Mara, he's a solid vet, what the hell else more do you want. Unless Orpik can be had, then yes, but we'll need to free up some more space correct??

Orpik resigned with Pittsburgh this afternoon. 6 years 22.5 mil.

Orpik signed already. Mara would be fine but we need a guy who actually plays a solid game in his own end...plus we have to many 2nd/3rd/4th tweeners. I think one/some will get dealt for a solid defensive dman.
