I have the horrible feeling that Gainey is simply waiting for Sundin, no matter how long.

UFA dman are really expensive, whether we like it or not. Don't you think that Komi would have gotten a multi-year 5M$ offer in this market? Seriously?
Have to give credit to Gainey, though. He did get Andrei Markov signed to a VERY affordable contract. Aside from Theodore, Bob is pretty good at retaining key talented players at a reasonable price.

It's absolutely not a guarantee that Komisarek will stay here, but I think Gainey has done well in that respect and maybe can convince Komisarek.

But if Komisarek has a great season, and with the upcoming (poor) crop of UFA defensemen, I think there's potential for Komisarek to break the bank and get an obscene salary on the free market next year, if that's what he wants.

Do you know how detroit does it? They sign their players to extensions early. That's why you have to do with a guy like Komisarek early and hard.
Yea..did you not understand the part of my post where I said he isn't on the market yet?..Therefore, he'll never get a 5.5-6.5 offer from us.

Open Market is obviously another story.

Detroit also sign players that WANT to play for them. See Hossa-Stuart.

sooo......instead of offering him $5M now you are going to wait till he hits the open market and you have to give him $6M. Can I do some business with you?

You'd have to assume that Bob is going after Jagr now that Hossa is gone. He's the best game breaker out of all the UFAs left (not named sundin).

Also, when you negotiate during the season, their value is lower.
Streit wasn't going to get anything more than 2.5 here. If Komi waits for open market, sure he'll get 4-5 maybe even 6. But he isn't on the open market, which is why i said I don't think Gainey will sign him for more than 4M if he does extend him before July 1st.
Komi has to agree. He can just wait to get UFA status. I think if the Habs can get him to sign a long term extension at 5M$ per, I'll be all for that. Of course, if it's 4M$ per, all the better...but 5M$ would still be a good move.

Komi seems commited to the team, like Markov was. He seems like a good candidate to start talks with early.

I have a terrible feeling that Wang is gonna offer Komi a 8+ year contract at 5m$+

Not many people would say no to that.

Well, it could pay off.

I don't see anyone else really worth going after.

As if the Hossa deal wasn't bad enough.

I don't think you understood what i meant.

I said I see Komi signing an extension around 4M during the season. I don't see Komi signing for 5-6M while his rights are still owned by us. If he gets to the open market though, it's another story
But I don't see Bob waiting for Komi to become UFA and see his price up 1-2M.

Basically, I completely agree with what you are saying...

That's awesome in theory, but you only have 20 roster spots and there comes a point where you need to spend money on upgrading your roster with a star, rather than incremental upgrades... and the Habs are at that point.

I have a feeling Huselius is coming here...him or Jagr

But in a perfect world, Demitra would come here

A perfect world and we'd get Sundin.

I'm ruling out Sundin, I have no patience...

Cue the "Good thing you aren't GM" comments.

For me, there's one guy I target in every crop of FA's as maybe not Bob's main target, but perhaps a secondary one.

Last year was Rafalski
This year is Demitra

Demitra just doesn't fill a need, honestly. Our wings are set. Unless Demitra is a center and I'm wrong?

Maybe you should replace him. I wonder why Atlanta hasn't given you a ring yet?

Because we need another winger.

A.Kost-Pleks-Kovy
Tanguay-Koivu-Higgins/S.Kost

Why are people still suggesting we go after wingers? Never mind that, unless we can sign someone and make a huge trade to swing us a big centerman.

Not trying to come back at you. I do agree agree with you about Waddell.

I'm just showing you how absurd that argument was.
