They can't handle anymore salary... They may be trying to make a team out of Malkin, Crosby, Staal, Letang and Fleury and have a bunch of AHL guys fill in the cracks... That puts alot of stress on those kids.

What are you talking about, if this is 100% correct, they have 9M to spend this year.

If it's 5 years that's a 6.6/year cap hit.

With the way the salary cap is going up, they should be fine.

Yes. Next year though Malkin's salary comes into play and Staal is up for RFA status, as well as Talbot and Kennedy.

They have Crosby, Malkin, Staal, Sykora (for now), Dupuis, Orpik, Whitney, Letang, Gonchar, Fleury... You left out a couple key players.

He couldn't get an offer sheet.

The article doesn't even say the deal is done.

"I'm hopeful that in the next couple of days, something will work out there," said Shero, the Penguins' general manager.

this seems high to me... 5.5? Emery goes to the finals gets 3-4... Ward goes to the finals gets 3-4... Kipper goes to the finals and gets 3-4... seemed to be a common theme... like the others he hadnt established himself as a true #1 prior to his run either

minues 4.6M from sydor and gill.

Add in a 8% raise in the salary cap (base estimate)=61.25 salary cap.

= roughly 9M if sydor and gill are gone and we have players signed to the cap max this year.

Once Staal is locked up long term, our core will be set.

They designated him for arbitration so teams couldn't send him offer sheets even if they wanted.

In a world where Jose Theodore makes 4.5M, Fleury at 5.5M makes perfect sense.

It doesn't matter if you understood.

And good for the Pens. You can't go wrong with a puck-moving defense, a talented goalie, and franchise centers.

They have $47.1M committed in salary if this is true. Plus they still need to fill five (5) places on the club (as far as I know).

Next year, Malkin will take up an $8.7M cap hit. Jordan Staal will also get a nice raise, probably up around the $3M mark. That's almost $12M in salary they will need to add.. and still have those five (5) positions to fill. They will free up approximately $7M in contracts (Sykora, Sydor, and Hill).. but this will in turn, cause them the need to add three (3) more players bringing it to a total of eight (8) players for minimal money.

Lines are not exact.

Malkin - Crosby - Sykora
Staal - Dupuis - Godard
Talbot - Kennedy - ???
??? - ??? - ???
???

Gonchar - Orpik
Whitney - Sydor
Gill - Eaton
Letang - Scuderi

Sabourin
Fleury

I normally take people to task on stuff like this, but in this particular case I'm willing to give someone slack for saying "resign". First of all the context makes it easy to tell what the person actually meant, so there's never any ambiguity. Second, I can't think of any other words off the top of my head with an "re" prefix that requires a hyphen after it. It's only "re-sign" because by coincidence there happens to be a word with an entirely different meaning spelled the same way. So I will needle people about typing "Thorton" but I'm willing to overlook "resign".
