Definitely surprised me.

However, we still have a few holes to fill. We're now down to 4 d-men.

Zipay reports today we might be interested in Havlat.

I love the guy's skill, but he's made of glass. He won't come cheap either.

We don't really have the luxury of taking a risk on Havlat. Id much rather make a play for Bernier.

LOL. For some reason, the repetitiveness of that joke coincides with its hilarity.

I was actually talking to a Hawks fan in the FA board about Havlat. Zipay touched on this idea as well.

Chicago has 8 NHL ready d-men in their system (well, 7 now with Wisnewski [sp?] tearing his ACL). They could certainly afford to package a d-man to make Havlat more appealing. Havlat's injury history certainly drags his value into the gutter, but if he can stay healthy, he is a great player.

Havlat on his own doesn't interest me. But Havlat + Barker.. and now you've gotta give it a serious look. Plus he would come off the books at the end of the year, and if we resigned him, theres no way he would get more than 4 mil per year. With so much tied up in Drury and Gomez, you have to start looking for skill at a bargain rate. Plus if we landed Barker in the deal, you could use part of Havlat's salary to resign him.

A top-6 of:
Redden - Rozy
Staal - Sanguinetti
Girardi - Barker

I mean c'mon.. what's not to like?

He is oft injured and has 1 year at 6 million (in cap space) left on his contract before he becomes a UFA. I can't image he carries a very steep price, aside from his contract.

actually I love this idea. 1 yr and he is gone. no long term commitment to add on to the cap. we get another good young dman. It probably won't cost much. it will leave another roster spot open the year after for Cherry, or Ani etc. I honestly think this would be the perfect fit. and if he gets injured, he gets injured... I don't think we are going to win the cup anyway next year.

I'd listen to that if I were Slats. Something along the lines of....

To NYR:
Cam Barker
Martin Havlat

To CHI:
Korpikoski
Dupont
Sauer
Pick/Another Mid-level prospect

Would Chicago do it? Overpayment on our end?

definately overpayment on our end. Remember we are doing a big favor to Chicago in getting rid of that Salary. They are $4mil over the cap right now and need to get under it before the season. But they will need a forward to replace Havlats scoring.

for those two I think

Prucha (definately don't need him anymore w/ havlat and Zherdov and we need to send a little money back)
mid level prospect... Dupont/Moore/Pyatt/Hillier
Sauer (don't see him getting a shot here)

You can't say that we're cutting them a break and offer them crap. There are a few other teams with some cap space and the need for D as well. And you can bet there would be some teams who were willing to make room as well.

They'd probably like one of Prucha or Dawes, one decent prospect and a 2nd round pick to start with.

Barker is no slouch. He was the 3rd overall pick in the 2004 draft and despite having developed slowly, is really starting to turn into a serious player. You might have to pay to get him.

but what teams are willing to take a $6 mil cap hit as well for a player that doesn't stay healthy.... remember that NJ at one time traded a 1st rder to get rid of cap space.

if they need more than throw them a 3rd rd pick

True, but assuming he doesn't stay healthy, who do we have to bring in to replace him?

Assuming we do a trade like Prucha, Sauer and Dupont as you proposed, we wind up like this:

Dawes/Zherdev - Gomez - Havlat
Zherdev/Dawes - Drury - Fritsche
Korpikoski - Dubi - Callahan
Voros/Rissmiller - Betts - Orr/Sjostrom

Redden - Rozsival
Staal - Barker
Girardi - ???
???

Hank and Vally

We have no top-six depth as it is now, so is bringing in an injury prone guy like Havlat even worth it? It'd almost make more sense to move Callahan instead of Prucha so you at least have some semblance of a scorer to replace Havlat if he goes down. Although I'd imagine clearing Prucha's cap hit is a key part of a deal like this, and Chicago is going to want some scoring back.

bernier, vermette, cheechoo should be the targets......cheap, young goal scorers......

I'd rather have Vermette then Havlat.

They are the same player, but Vermette is not injury prone.

And, Vermette could probably be had for less.

HAHA....i agree, but i wouldnt argue with bernier as he has some size......

but if the rangers could grab vermette, it would be GREAT as i see him in the mold of a more offensive drury
