Vermette to Arbitration, Meszaros wants $4mill / yr

likely going to arbitration, he decides tomorrow.

http://www.ottawasun.com/Sports/Sena...61461-sun.html

Quote:
There has been no progress made in discussions between the Senators and restricted free-agent D Andrej Meszaros. It's believed he and fellow RFA Vermette could get Group II offer sheets. It's believed Meszaros is seeking $4 million a season and that's why talks have stalled with Ottawa. As for Vermette, he has to decide by tomorrow if he's going to file for arbitration. He is one year away from becoming an unrestricted free agent.
I hate the Sens' RFA's

Ya I read that, how much does in get via Arbitration? 3 would be fair, hopefully not higher.

I guess Meszaros saw all those fat contracts handed out to other defensemen the past few days and started licking his chops. No way is he worth 4m.

You really get the feeling Murray could have signed Mezaros for 3.5 over 4-5 years...maybe with an increasing salary structure. Now we might lose him and have to overpay for Vermette.

I really love Vermette too, he has the potential to just burst out into a premiere player. While I've had my doubts about Meszaros, he's young and can only improve.

Sigh...

If Vermette files for arb, he is exempt from offer sheets.

Here come the sign and trades. Just like with Hossa. And likely with the same team.

I'm glad he said 4. Whatever number you hear from the player/agent, that's the high. The Sens will come in at 3, and they'll settle at 3.5.

If Vermette hasn't decided yet, it raises questions if he's been getting offer sheets. If he has, surely he wouldn't be considering arbitration, but also maybe they'd come in after he's left himself open.

Meszaros, $4M/yr, depending how long, I'd give it to him. He's not even asking for what Ron Hainsey got, which I think he could ask for (whether he'd get it is a different arguement)

Just to put things in perspective, right now, the highest paid sens D is Phillips, 3.5/yr, Volchenkov is second at 2.5/yr. No way he's worth more than either of them.

There was an article yesterday in the ottawasun, saying Murray was expecting a raid of offer sheets to be thrown at them.

http://www.ottawasun.ca/Sports/Senat...50351-sun.html

They named the Thrashers, Canucks and Blue Jackets.

Isn't Ottawa forced to move Vermette now? I mean, they've gotta get something of value out of him while they can (other than 1 year of his services), right?

Jackets are still offering Klesla and a 2nd (might bump that to a first if need be).

This is irrelevant to the Meszaros negotiations. Yes, they maybe better players, but with the higher cap they are both currently underpaid and therefore can't be used as measuring sticks.

But Hainsey got what he got as an UFA. Even though he is better than Hainsey, that UFA/RFA status matters because signing teams have to give up additional compensation for RFAs. However, I suppose the UFA/RFA differences may be narrowing.

We can afford to give him 4 a year, can't we? Also, Vermette in arbitration may prove to be good.
