Janne Pesonen signs contract with Pittsburgh Penguins

Just heard his interview from local radio station.

Here's the link to the news:
http://www.radiomega.fi/?area=uutise...00000000016405

Basically it says:
Janne Pesonen near NHL-contract.

Hockeyplayer Janne Pesonen is very near to NHL-contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Pesonen told in live interview with Radio Mega, that 1-year contract will probably be signed and published in the next few days.

Here's the player's bios.
http://www.eurohockey.net/players/sh...i?serial=10432

What do you think about this probable signing? He had very good regular season but suffered injury to his hand during the playoffs.

Pretty good numbers for the Finnish league.. If true, it's at least promising that we're closely scouting Scandinavia for some potential home-runs. Our European scouting hasn't been very prominent if our last few drafts are any indication.

As it stands right now we do have one spot open on our top-3 lines.

I assume he's good defensively?

according to his stats it looks like his development rocketed the last couple of years.. its worth a shot on the cheap, and he might pan out... kinda worried about the draft position, but it could be because he wasnt scouted very heavily.

gotta look outside the NHL sometimes to find those diamonds in the rough.

Janne Pesonen! My favorite player in the Finnish Elite League.

I've seen this guy play live many times and he is a great offensive player, but not bad defensively either. He has great hands, great movement and he's not afraid to get physical sometimes. The only complaint that people seem to have about him is that he gets frustrated easily and he's a bit of a diver, but I've seen worse than him. Pesonen could become a pretty good 2nd-3rd line winger in the NHL, and wingers are what Pitt needs!

Scoring leader in points last year in SM-Liiga.
Won 4 championships with Kärpät.
Has good drive.
Not big. 5-10, around 175.
Is used to wear black and gold.

Don't know about his defense, but seems to have a knack for scoring.
Interesting.

Who out there knows anything about this guy? I read the bio, but I know there are a couple Finnish posters around these boards. What's the scoop? What is his style of play?

Edit: I typed this before Mr. Penguin responded.

Hardi, have you ever seen this guy play? If so can you tell us what his style is and if he's NHL ready? Thanks!

I like it. Low risk move. Could play well and be a top 2 line offensive weapon, or be average and add scoring to the bottom lines.

Can we please go out and get some grit now?

Shove him on Crosby's line immediately.

Someone will have to tell him that will not be tolerated around here!

Indeed

But really, Pesonen could either be a bust or then become a pretty good NHler, that's how I see it. And the reason why his draft number is so low is because he sttuggled at the beginning of his career, but the last 2 seasons he has been the MVP of his team, and maybe in the whole league, and you gotta remember that the Finnish Elite League is one of the top leagues in the world right after NHL and that Russian super mega league.

This could be interesting too:

Pesonen-Staal-TK
Dupuis-Brent/Stone-Godard.

I was kind of disappointed with him there, but it's a scenario also, yes.
Another one is Dupuis as RW on L3 and TK as LW on L4.
We'll have some options.

Anyways, as MT likes to mix lines, probably we'll see many, if not all of them.

Five reasons why this is a good signing and a good sign in general:

1. As Jacob said we're actively scouting in Europe again and not just for draft picks.
2. Was originally a pick of the Ducks. Usually they are good evaluators of potential.
3. Very good numbers in the regular season in a decent league.
4. Finnish forwards know how to play D, as a general rule.
5. Reminds me of something the Red Wings would do.

Nice work, Ray. Did I mention we trust in Ray?

PS - assuming this guy is a winger... W depth FTW.
