Pittsburgh signs Janne Pesonen

Pens sign Janne Pesonen, according to Andy Strickland, who's been dead on so far.

(P.S. My girlfriend's at the hospital in labor, so what the hell am I doing on here?)

Been talking all day about this on the Pens' board. There is a link there with highlights of his play:

http://hfboards.com/showthread.php?t=532472

He looks like a quality addition. There are also some rumblings that Shanahan has contacted the Pens about playing for them for a contract in the $1.8 mil. range.

He's been the best player in Finland for years. Nice to see what he can do in NHL.

His contract will pay him in pesos instead of dollars.

Well, dollar's value is so low right now and it seems to sunk all the time, so it doesn't matter. Perhaps even better that way

Congrats! Breaking a minor NHL signing on the main board is certainly something to be proud of.

I'm rather excited to see what he can bring.

I am curious to see the dollar amounts. We had only a limited amount to play with, about $3 mil, so this signing could eat up anywhere from a third to half or more of that.

Well I wouldn't consider the best player of the SM-Liga to be a minor signing, but what do I know.

Eh? I doubt it's more than 800,000.

I'm a huge Pens fan, and I'm curious.

I've heard he can play on the top line with Crosby and Satan.

Is that true? Will he even be in the NHL next year?

Thanks.

Ville Leino was voted the best player in the SM-liiga's regular season. Pesonen was the leading scorer.

Here's the list of their leading scorers over the past 10 years:

1998-99: Jan Caloun (HIFK)
1999-00: Kai Nurminen (TPS)
2000-01: Petri Varis (Jokerit)
2001-02: Janne Ojanen (Tappara)
2002-03: Tomas Kucharcik (HPK)
2003-04: Timo Pärssinen (HIFK)
2004-05: Steve Kariya (Ilves)
2005-06: Tony Salmelainen (HIFK)
2006-07: Martin Kariya (Blues)
2007-08: Janne Pesonen (Kärpät)

So yeah, minor signing. Not that I wouldn't love for him to be Selanne v2.0.

He was getting over 1million$ deals from Russia but chose not to take them because his aim was to play in NHL. So the deal could be for lesser money but has to be one way otherwise he couldn't have accepted it. He will get his roster spot and he will be fine. Great scorer, was one of the main penaltykillers in Kärpät, played every important minutes throughout the season, played playoffs with a broken hand...

Nice low risk signing. Pens got an asset for nothing.
