Do you remember this team? (October 5, 2006)

These 19 players saw ice time against the Caps for the season opener at MSG 2 years ago:

M. Cullen
J. Jagr
M. Nylander
B. Shanahan
M. Straka
J. Ward
M. Hossa
B. Betts
A. Hall
P. Prucha
N. Dawes
R. Hollweg

M. Malik
K. Rachunek
M. Rozsival
A. Ward
F. Tyutin
T. Pock

H. Lundqvist

By my count, two seasons later we are returning only 4 of 12 forwards (assuming Hollweg is back) and 1 of 6 defensemen. When you add Lundqvist, that makes 6 of 19 still around. Simply stated...more than 2/3 of our team has turned over in 2 seasons.

By the way, we won 5-2, with Jagr, Shanny, and Straka accounting for 4 of our 5 goals. Jagr scored our first goal of the season on the first shot of the game only 29 seconds in. A fun night at the Garden.

Wow, that defense was pretty awful compared to what we have now.

I think the new CBA makes this happen more then we think. Can we see the Caps line up for that game? And how many they still have? Just curious to see if it is similar.

I don't think Hollweg will be back. I'd be surprised if he is.

M. Cullen: After all the hand-wringing over the trade, anyone missing this guy now?

J. Jagr: Still a good player, but coming off one of the worst seasons in his career. If we didn't let him go this year, it would have been next year or at most, the year after.

M. Nylander: Keeping Nylander and signing only Gomez or Drury might have resulted in a better year this year, but Nylander did get hurt this year, is an older player, and really has no place on this team now that Jagr is gone.

B. Shanahan: He may still end up on the team, but he has clearly lost a couple steps and if he comes back, it will be in a limited role.

M. Straka: Still a good player, but age and injuries are catching up to him. I think he's got another couple years in the tank, but the fact that he wasn't picked up by an NHL team is telling.

J. Ward: Marginal player
M. Hossa: Marginal player who will be playing in Russia next year
A. Hall: Marginal player who somehow got a 3 year contract

M. Malik: Was better than most fans gave him credit for, but I think the boos got to him. Good positioning and break out pass, but slow and hesitated with the puck too often, allowing forecheckers to get in on him.

K. Rachunek: Decent player, but too prone to mistakes

A. Ward: Nothing special. A #4 dman at best.

F. Tyutin: Good young player that we are gonna miss, but getting Zherdev is worth it. May never develop into a 1st pair dman, but is a solid #3.

T. Pock: Career AHLer or 3rd pairing dman

The fact that we've made the playoffs the last 3 seasons is really a testament to Jagr, Lundqvist and Renney IMO. Next years team, on paper at least, is a far cry better than the team we had to open 2006.

Wow, can't believe we made the playoffs that year. Shows just how good Jagr was.

Yeah, total BS. Wouldn't Jagr's option year have kicked in had he won it as he rightfully deserved?

Rozsival-Malik
Kasparaitis-Tyutin

Yeah, they only let in the 2nd least amount of goals in the East...

The grass is always greener with Slats. Rucinsky scored 55 pts in 52 games on our 2nd line the season before that year; a year where he actually didn't play much at all with Jagr, mostly with Rucchin-Hossa/Sykora.

Rucinsky couldn't even get a new contract after that year...

I needed a hockeyfix the other day, and found a old game between Ottawa and NYR from that year (05/06) on the computer.

Nobody realized how good that team was, Straka was really good before his shoulder problem started, allong with age natrually, but Rucinsky also really stood out. Someone like him is exactly what teams are looking for these days, back then everyone still thought Keith Tkachuk was a star in this league despite the new game.

All I am saying that since the lockout, in the regular season we have basically gotten worse and worse the more improvements Slats have done with this team.

They never got how good they where. Sure they had some flaws, but that could be the best team we have had in NY since basically 94'. JJ blew his shoulder and everything fell apart in the PO's, but its a team with forwards like that everyone is trygin to build today. Straka was a star back then, like we all saw how well Nyls could play the year after in the PO's, but Straka was probably even better then that that year. And Rucinsky was scoring over a PPG on a 2nd line with Rucchin and Hossa/Sykora, and he was really flying all over the ice.

I think the '05-06 was the most exciting year of the three since the end of the lock out. Between finally getting hockey back, to all fresh new faces on the team, to the exciting ways this team won games, it was just so awesome.

I remember Calgary came into the Garden and had a lead in the 3rd, but we stormed back and beat them. We were finding ways to win, and that's always BIG. The win over Edmonton on Mark Messier night was just as good.

If anyone ever gets a chance to see the '05-06 season in review DVD, definitely watch it, it's awesome.

I'm talking in terms of the individual players. Lundqvist and the system will always limit scoring and make the defense look, statistically, elite.

i was sooo pumped that night it was soooo exciting i remember screaming when jagr scored 29 seconds in...but weekes was playing that night. 2 years later it really shows how much different of a team it really is. but im feeling more and more optimistic because although i will miss jagr, that era is over and this team can be freed of jagr's anchor holding them back
