Great signing. Mara is a solid bottom pair guy.

Redden-Girardi
Rozsival-Staal
Kalinin-Mara

Much improved over our top 6 last season, IMO.

Wow, you could argue we actually have 6 guys who can play in the proper slots 1-6.

Mara took less money because this is where he wanted to be. There's always room for guys who care deeply about wearing our sweater.

You might not, but Renney does. It does make a difference.

GREAT deal.

Steal, IMO.

Welcome back, Paul.

Staal - Redden
Rozsival - Girardi
Kalinin - Mara

Or what ever. Doesn't really mater with that group, solid defense this year.

Great signing, good player for where he will play (3rd pairing) and great terms.

I actually like the fact that he's a re-signing, returning 4 of 6 defenders will help keep consistency and any cohesion they had last year. If there was an offer out there to even a better defender who would be a totally new face, I'm glad we went with Mara.

Now, get me Vermette!

Prucha + Callahan + Potter

Vermette

And anyway you slice it Vermette is an upgrade.

Vermette>Callahan
Vermette>Prucha

Fritsche=Callahan (mention this because that is who will be taking his place)

Do it, Slats!!!!

After listening to what he said last season during the penguins series with his Messier-like interview, I wanted him back.

Mara is underrated, IMO.

Plays with decent grit, Has a heavy shot from the point, he can skate, he can move the puck.

Sure, he has deficiencies, but you can't for much more in a 6th defenseman.

Great deal.

We are $1Mil over the cap. Won't be surprised to see a trade or two since we have a few RFAs to sign.

Really nice deal. Hopefully Renney lets him be a little more physical.

I think the defense could end up like this:

Redden-Staal
Mara/Kalinin-Rozsival
Kalinin/Mara-Girardi

I just don't imagine this team is gonna have a Rozsival-Girardi pairing.

Or maybe just:

Redden-Rozsival
Staal-Girardi
Kalinin-Mara

Still, very solid looking defense. A helluva lot better then 2 years ago.

So just put in Fritsche or Sjostrom in there instead of Prucha or Callahan.

it matters, especially in a defensive minded system. you won't see 2 right handed d-men playing together. you're much more likely to see 2 left handed players playing together, just cause righty's are more rare...

Yes indeed - You could really sense he 'wanted it' and his game reflected it.
I was NOT a Mara fan until April...but here's a guy that can play a physical game and don't forget about that big shot from the point. The fact we get him on a 1 year is fantastic. Welcome back.

Correct, SOS. Why do so many people continue to look past his weaknesses and development needs and think he should be with the big club? Sangs has the potential to be a very good player. He's not close to being there as of yet.

great signing thought he was gone and not an option with Redden Kalinin and Roszival signed, extremely happy about our defence + Lundqvist

This is a nice surprise. I always liked Mara for what he brought to the team, nothing more or less then expected him. Great third pairing guy, helluva shot that I wished he used more often.

And the terms? A steal.

The defense, on paper, is a huge upgrade over last year. If only for the fact that Staal and Girardi are a year better.
