Canucks Acquire Steve Bernier for 2nd and 3rd picks

For Immediate Release: July 4, 2008

CANUCKS ACQUIRE FORWARD STEVE BERNIER FROM BUFFALO

IN EXCHANGE FOR 2ND AND 3RD ROUND DRAFT PICKS

Vancouver, B.C. –Vancouver Canucks General Manager Mike Gillis announced today that the club has acquired right wing, Steve Bernier from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for a second round Draft pick in 2010 and third round pick (Los Angeles’ selection) in 2009.

“Steve Bernier is a highly regarded young player who’s enjoyed success early in his career,” said Gillis. “With his right-handed shot he will be a great addition to our top six forward group and an asset to our power play.”

Excellent. Sign him long term, please.

He should be perfect with the twins. VERY happy.

And people start to breathe....

Not bad IMO. 2nd round pick that he has two seasons to regenerate and a third round pick next year.

To be consistent, he does have to regenerate those picks or we'll have the same prospect system as before...thin and only providing talent in spurts.

I'm shocked that we were able to acquire Bernier without losing a roster player or first round pick. Fantastic move for us. Addresses our lack of size, skill and grit in the top six and gives the Sedins a longterm linemate.

It's not so bad when the picks are traded for young players. Bernier is the same age as Kesler, went seven picks before him in the 2003 draft.

Haha, some posters around here thought Bernier would be a solid centre-piece in a deal with Bieksa going back the other way. Apparently his conditioning is pretty bad, and Buffalo felt San Jose off-loaded some garbage in the Campbell trade. He can hit the gym with Wellwood.

You know it's almost like the off season is still young or something.

He's an RFA right now, so I'm guessing Buffalo couldn't get him signed to a deal they liked. Shouldn't be a big deal for us if he wants a bit above market value, we've got tons of room.

Nice. Get Sundin and we can have a few solid aged forwards with a good youth movement in Bernier Grabner, Raymond, Hansen....maybe Hodgson, Wellwood.
