We can exceed the cap by 10% until the end of training camp ($5.8MM or so). The #s at nhlscap/hockeybuzz.com include several 2 way contracts for HFD bound players (about $2.4MM including Pock) plus Orr & Hollweg's roughly $1MM+ (neither are locks to make the team) plus Rissmiller & Voros $1MM each could also be heading to HFD. Korpedo could see time again in HFD, too.

I'm not all that worried about it.

The defense, on paper, is a huge upgrade over last year. If only for the fact that Staal and Girardi are a year better.
I don't know if I'd say it's a "huge upgrade."

Basically you return Roszival, Staal, Mara, and Girardi.

Tyutin replaced by Kalinin is probably a downgrade. Kalinin has potential to be as good or better, maybe, than Tyutin, but he's not consistent enough we've heard. I'll call that a slight downgrade.

Redden is obviously a big upgrade over the Backman/Malik revolving door, but that's an upgrade at just 1/6 defensive spots. It's not exactly a huge defensive makeover.

We got better on defense. Including Staal's progression. Let's leave out some of the other superlatives.

Glad to have him back. He's a hell of a bargain at that price. If he can show the same intensity he showed in the Pittsburgh series, he'll be a lot of fun to watch.

Yay, thank you for coming back Mara.

As much as I want to see Sanguinetti as soon as possible, he belongs in the AHL. It's obvious this team wants a shot at the cup again and it would be a little too risky having him come up right away

Great news. So Mara/Kalinin/Potter for the 3rd pairing?

no i think he deserved every bit of it. How many times did that guy make a pass out across hanks crease? Mental lapses all over the place. He did nothing particularly well, and if anything maybe got a lot less crap then he derserved, considering all the good feelings he generated with that between the leg penalty shot against Washington. That bought him a temporary reprieve.
So long Marek, you wont be missed.

That's not really saying much though. The East is kind of in shambles when it comes to defense right now

We have 4 defensemen that can hit 30 points next season though, which is damn impressive if you think about it. None of them really sacrifice their defensive play for offense either

I wonder if Renney will put Staal on the PP this year.

Fantastic.

I knew Mara wanted to stay, and he wasnt a greedy *******, was patient last season, and look what he gets- pretty much a starting job on the third pair.

Good guy, with a ton of upside that i think STILL hasnt been realized.

He knows how to play in NY, has been solid and also has an offensive flair to his game that can help out big time on the second pp unit.

Very happy about this, and im happy for Mara.

He was up and down and in and out of the lineup with Bakman and Malik, and i thought he was the most consistent out of the three and didnt say a WORD when we all knoew he should have been playing instead of those bums at points in the season.

Played very well IMO in both playoffs the past two season as well.

Nice signing and a much more solid Defense than last year.

Nice job Slats.

So did I until he acted like a real jerk when he got benched.

Mara handled his benching like a professional.

the good think is that Mara's style seems more well suited for the way Sather explained the team style was going to change. Lets not forget this was is supposed to be a puck moving dman who was used more in a defensive role this season. I think hes going to be more comfortable this season. With our current d group i feel like well have more offense this year while being just as good in our own end as before (which if you remember was realllllly good).

Perfect signing...

I don't think the Rangers have a kid who you'd feel confident in this spot out of training camp. One year contract means he won't block any kids next season and that come the trade deadline, since he is a third pair defenseman for the Rangers, he may have value to another team looking for a vet rental. I think this was a smart signing.

which i agree with, but its pretty damn cool to be able to say it though isnt it? and then you add in the best goalie in the east (or to placate the whiny Devil fans, lets say one of the top 2 goalies in the east), and youve got a team that should be very very good at keeping pucks out of their zone AND keeping pucks out of their goal. it all leads to more wins

Great deal. Mara really played well at stretches last year and I'm glad to have him back for a full season. Good contract and everything. Way to go, Glen.
