I think Buffalo would have matched anything under $3 million

Sundin signing here, along with Demitra, and we would have a top 6 that doesn't include Pyatt. Oh, dare to dream.

Awesome. Glad Gillis is being active and swung this deal. Still needs to build a second-line but this is the perfect kind of guy to play with the Sedins.

Agreed. It's a good asset management if this is the guy they were targeting.

Burrows-Kesler-Pyatt
Pettinger-Johnson-Hordichuk

2nd line needs some size but overall the Canucks aren't looking so bad anymore.

awesome! exactly what we needed and a great deal! now hopefully Bernier develops into a legit 30 goal power forward.

this makes a huge difference in the look of our team.

And the Canucks prospered. Nice to have something positive after all the doom and gloom.

And in fact, since the 3rd rounder is LA's they still have their 1st, 2nd and 3rds in 2009, so they can make an offer sheet at basically any range if they want to. Whether it's smart to do so or not is of course another question.

I'm a little alarmed that Bernier has never managed more than 32 points in a season, and only 1 goal in 22 playoff games -- based on his reputation, I expected a bit more than that. But overall it seems like a decent acquisition. It sounds like Buffalo wasn't impressed with his character after acquiring him, so that's interesting again in light of Gillis' famous comment about wanting character players, having now picked up Bernier and Wellwood but passing on Jokinen. That said, again you have to look at the cost of acquiring someone when you look at whether character issues are a big sticking point or not. In this case, the Canucks were able to acquire a guy with top-line forward potential for a fairly cheap price, so I think you can overlook it.

Still it's nice to see something positive finally.
Oh, I agree its not the magical fix, but its a good move. It shows the franchise is not coming to an end, GMs will trade with Gillis, that he has some sort of plan and he is going out there and making (or at least is able to make) smart moves. I agree there is a long way to go to make this team into one that is above fighting for 8th (which with Lou will always be the case, the nucks arent lucky enough to get a #1 pick), but the doom in gloom around here was getting ridiculous.

So now the Sabres got a first, second, third, and seventh round pick for Campbell. Wouldn't rebuilding be fun??!?!?!

for the record, people putting wellwood at our second line centre spot are insane.he is a third liner at best.if anything kesler will get a bigger role and be the second liner.might even take burrows with him.

Completely agree.

Now it's funny reading these posts, it went from 'REBUILD NAO!!!!' to 'We're almost contenders now'. We really are reactionary.

Woulda liked Stafford, but obviously that wasn't happening so Bernier is awesome too!!!

Now we can trade Bieksa for another top 6 forward, sign Sundin/Demitra and we are set to go!

Excellent trade, excellent pickup. I've liked Bernier ever since he was drafted.

If you look back at his 39 game stint a couple years ago with the Sharks he put up 27 points. This kid has very good offensive instincts and will develop into a very good power forward.

Right handed shot, good size and grit, will definitely look good with the Sedins, or even on a line with Raymond if it doesn't work out with the twins. His only downfalls are his skating (which can be developed) and his conditioning (again, which can be worked on).

The third round pick going to Buffalo was LA's 3rd rounder...likely higher than what ours would have been; however, the key is that we still have all our picks intact for next season meaning we still have the ability to make any offersheet we want.

Excellent move...perhaps there still is some hope? If Sundin ever decides to sign here, look out. With Sundin and one more offer sheet signing, I like where this team is going.

Sedin-Sedin-Bernier
Raymond-Sundin?-????
Burrows-Kesler-Pyatt
Hordichuk-Johnson-Pettinger
Wellwood

I'm thinking that this really does make Pyatt redundant......and not just for the locker room "pretty boy" quota.

Very happy about this deal. Not sure if it's been mentioned in this thread, but the fact that Bernier has a RW shot and some decent hands is a HUGE feather in the cap of our powerplay... someone had to replace Linden as the best RH shot on our forward corps right?

Maybe they are hoping AV can whip them into shape.

Hindsight is 20/20 but how funny is it now remembering how often the words "knee jerk" were thrown around when Nonis was fired.
