Finally we have the last piece of the puzzle. Now we know why we lost the Cup to Detroit; a constant and severe lack of Janne Pesonen.

Is a he a left or right wing?

You know, unless someone from Wilkes-Barre blows the Pens staff away in training camp, this guy has probably an inside track to not only make the team, but play some quality minutes at this stage. Don't know about being Crosby's winger, though.

Janne Pesonen's willingness to shoot the puck and his timing will make him valuable where ever he gets a chance. Is there an opening on the top two-lines or will he start by dominating the AHL?

Primarily a rightwing, but if needed I doubt he'd protest if he was to play the other wing.

Kärpät players usually are willing to do what is best for the team.

As of right now the top two left wing spots are a cash grab between Fedotenko, Dupuis, Staal (potentially), Talbot, and Pesonen.

How about his quickness?

ADD: Also, can he perform on the shootout? With no more Christensen and Ruutu, we might be a bit thin there.

According to Bandolero on the Janne Pesonen thread on the Penguins board:

So he should be quite good on the shootout

Check out the youtube videos posted in the thread on him on the Pens page. He is a pretty slick puck handler and looks like he can get a shot off in traffic and score on breakaways and penalty shots, which like you said is going to be something the Pens need need next year.

Letang-Staal-Crosby

I think we're good.
At least I hope they use Staal in the shootout. He's absolute money on breakaways.

Malkin is money on breakaways, but can't buy a goal in the shootout. Joe Sakic is as good an NHLer on breakaways not named Mario Lemieux I've ever seen but he too struggles in the shootout.

I don't know why, but it appears to be a different animal.

I dont know about that. I can remeber only 2 chances he scored on a breakawy (1 being a penalty shot). Although since hes not quick enough he cant creat seperation which inturn adds pressure and hooking/contact etc... With the pressure of having the other players skating right after you, I think he might do well with his big reach (and he looks like the person that will try creative thigns)

Well we Pens fans will do our best to not turn this kid into the next Alexei Mikhnov as far as hype goes, but hearing a lot of Finns who seem to at least see him a lot, say such good things about him, it does get me a little excited about a signing that normally would just be simply for depth. Here's to Pesonen cracking the opening night roster and surprising MANY people.

Crosby is a mixed bag, and we've never used Staal before.

So yeah, we might be a little thin.

That doesn't really say much. Malkin is phenomenal at all of that, yet his shootout record isn't.

I'd just assumed they did shootouts in Finland. I guess they don't.

Pesonen is a useful player even if he doesn't make the top 6.

So he has a decent change to stick around and work his way up if he gets a shot.

Well if you look at it from a logical perspective, in the shootout a goalie knows what's coming and has plenty of time to think about what he's going to do. During the actual game with a broken play and a breakaway it's less thinking involved and just more reaction. When a goalie is prepared for a 1-on-1 situation they're in a better position you would think to make the save.

Leftie. Maybe there is interest in his former team mate Hannes Hyvönen? A huge right handed slap shot on skates.

No confirmation yet. The latest from the PG:

He continued doing that yesterday -- working with assistant general manager Chuck Fletcher on a contract the Penguins hope to finalize today with free-agent winger Janne Pesonen, the 2007-08 scoring champion in Finland's top league
