For once a trade that both sides seemed to like somewhat. I would do it from an Oilers perspective. It frees up room in the top 6 for one of Lynch, Wowitka, Semenov or even Matt Greene. Plus it gives us a potent center combo especially if we sign Nedved.
Sounds pretty fair to me. Bonk for Smith is fairly equal, and I think a 2nd for Izzy is more than enough.
I for one would love to see this trade. It has some other issues as well, such as what to do with Horcoff. It frees up a spot on the left side, and gives us room on the back-end for one of Woywitka, Lynch, et al.
The problem with this deal is that Horcoff has played his way off the fourth line. There is no way that MacT will play him on the fourth line all year (and I actually agree with him - Horcoff has established himself as a capable third liner at least) which means that Hemsky will probably be stuck down there. While I think Bonk would be a great second line centerman, I'm not sure I'd be willing to pay him and Nedved close to $7-8 million combined.
No doubt that makes us a better team up front for the next couple years, I'd be DAMN tempted. Horcoff could play third line instead of Pisani ya know - he is a capable LWer, and I'm sure could learn RW. I'll say one thing - Nedved-Bonk-Reasoner-Stoll is a killer group of centers!
I dunno. I think a lot of Bonk's numbers come as a result of playing with the Alfredssons, Hossas and Havlats on the team. I don't see a HUGE difference between Bonk and Horcoff to be honest. Bonk is a bit better offensively but Horc is more versatile and better defensively.
I want to give a Horc a season as a top 6 to see what he can do. He did put up good numbers in NCAA and has imporved every year in the league
