Meszaros was a wreck last year.

Phillips and Volchenkov are very, very good.

I think this might be the deepest blueline in the East. Let's wait and see.

I'd like to see Staal take another leap forward.

Excellent news. Bargain of the week for the Rangers. Mara is the ideal 5/6 defenseman for this team. I expect him to have a good year next year on the 2nd PP unit on the point.

All I hear from Sens fans is that Volchenkov is, at best, a #4 d-man.

I can't wait to see what kind of year Lundqvist has with this defense. I'm feeling a sub-2 GAA, a .920 save %, and a vezina!

Really? From what I've seen from Volchenkov, especially earlier in the year, he was a complete machine, crunching guys left and right.

I might be wrong.

Yeah, I think Volchenkov really took a step forward last year and was fantastic for the Sens (well, until the whole team took a ****)

edit: however, it seems like Mezaros took some steps back after his promising rookie year. After losing Chara and Redden recently, I'm not sure I'd say Ottawa's D is all that impressive. Phillips and Volchenkov are nice, but the rest are kind of "eh" in my mind. Maybe if Lee comes in and blows us all away...

Then again, while I like the Rangers D at this point, I don't think it's fantastic either. I think Kalinin could really be upgraded and I don't like the thought of him getting a lot of icetime.

phillips is a shut-down defenseman....he is good

mezsaros is not....he is a defensive liability

volchenkov blocks a lot of shots, however he also blocks a lot of unnecessary shots that ricochet off him and go in........he wouldnt be anywhere near #1......maybe #3

For that price and length, I'll give it a shot.

The disappointing thing about Mara is how talented he is. We're not talking about a guy who is very limited and is a bit of a bubble player, we're talking about a guy who really has the talent to do it all.

But again, he just never seems to do it all at the same time or long enough.

Mara is a hit or miss 5/6 defenseman, but from a pure talent standpoint he's far and away these most talented guy on our defense. It's mind boggling with him sometimes.

From the way you're describing Mara, sounds like a Malakhov type to me. Same thing - immensely talented, can look like Chris Pronger with hits and maddeningly inconsistent.

Wow, tremendous signing. I love it.

Our defense looks very solid right now. We no longer have to suit up Jason Strudwick six or seven games in a row... The top 6 is excellent and we have solid depth at the AHL level.

Did we bring Hutch back or did he sign somewhere else?

I'd say that's a pretty good observation I hadn't really thought about.

Heck I'd be happy if he at least did what Malakhov did with his talent.

Where does this leave room to call up one of the kids like Sauer or Potter?

Oh right, it doesn't.

Staal - Redden
Girardi - Rozsival
Kalinin - Mara

By god do I like that defense. Lundqvist is going to have a GREAT year.

I love this signing. I love him taking a paycut to stay here. I love the fact that it's only one year to keep possibilities open for next year. All around a great deal for the Rangers and I think it will turn out to be a great one for Mara's career as well. He has the opportunity to really shine with this defensive squad now and with only a one year deal, he will have to prove himself. Great signing

I'm pretty content with Mara and Kalinin as our #5 and 6 D-men. Let Pock sit in the stands as our # 7 and let Corey Potter and Sanguinetti soak up a ton of ice time in Hartford.

After reading the article on Sam's blog, I'm really pulling for Mara to succeed here. I mean I always want our players to perform well, but a guy who wanted so badly to play for us and win with us... Who gives a hometown discount to a team they've only played 1 season with? Mara is a classy guy, and opefully he'll find his niche this season.

Dunno if I agree with that...he's talented but what makes him the most talented guy? He's not the fastest skater, he doesn't have the best breakout pass, he doesn't skate the puck out really well, his stickhandling isn't fantastic, his passing isn't great...really the best thing he has is a hell of a shot. It's not that he does all the other things poorly, it's just that he doesn't do them exceptionally well either. I think he's a good #3 and PP triggerman if he realized his potential.

Maybe if Renney uses him more in that role now that Jagr is gone...set him up for the big shot from the point. He could be real solid if given the right role.

Provided he hits the net, I'm all for it. Not that he showed the capability to do that last year.

HOWEVER, as a 5/6 guy for under $2m for one year, I think he's a great signing. Let's not forget that as much as we may like or dislike our defense on paper, the truth is that the Rangers system, along with Lundqvist, is always going to make defensemen look better than they are.

The fact that on paper we're very solid plus those things will make this the best defense in the conference, IMO.

Great signing. I would only add that this also brings a guy that knows Renney's system back into the team. With all the change going on right now I think that is really important.

I think he's referring to the two great seasons he had in Pheonix where he put up almost 50 points playing with not-so-great players.

I know he got a lot more ice time, but still. From 40-something points to the 16 he had last year on our team is somewhat of a disappointment. He had one measly goal last year despite having a pretty good shot. Seems like he's thinking defense first now under Renney's system, which I suppose is a good thing.

Either way, for 2 million bucks he is a huge bargain

Ex-Bruin Paul Mara will be back on the Ranger blue line after agreeing to a one-year deal worth $1.95 million, about a 33 percent pay cut from last season. According to his Boston-based agent, Jay Fee, Mara was assured in his exit interview with the Blueshirt coaching staff that the 2008-09 Rangers would suit his game, play to his strengths. There were other teams interested in the former Belmont Hill standout, said Fee. "And he left money on the table elsewhere," Fee said, "but Paul sees the Rangers as a real Cup contender next season and wants to be a key contributor."

love it..

i was much higher on him than most. he got some more grit to his game when he came back and a couple times housed Crosby..

great shot which he'll be able to better utilize now that Jagr isn't on the team.. paycut too.. solid solid man.
