Bernier Trade vs Grabovski Trade

It seems like Bob Gainey got a good return for Grabovski especially if we were to compare what the Sabres got for Bernier.
Grabovski fetched a 5th Rd in 2008 and a 2nd Rd in 2010

vs

Bernier fetched a 3rd Rd in 2009 and a 2nd Rd in 2010

Bernier is much more proven than Grabs and has a bigger upside and could well be a power forward in the Nhl.
Bernier's Stats:
07-08 - 76g - 16g - 16a = 32pts
06-07 - 62g - 15g - 16a = 31pts
05-06 - 39g - 14g - 13a = 27pts

Did Bob real make a good trade and got a better return or did the Sabres just didn't get fair value for Bernier?
Discuss.

Apparently the Canucks were going to throw an offer sheet at Bernier, so I think Regier just took care of it that way.

Well i think a 5th pick from 2008 is worth as much than a 3rd pick in 2009, since the player is already one year ahead in devlopement, so i think Bernier went at the same price than Grabovsky. And also a 2nd round in 2010 from Toronto is always better than a Vancouver 2nd round in 2010.

My understanding is that they offered a trade to avoid losing their 2nd round pick this year. So this way they can still make an offer sheet to other players, like Filpulla.

I hope Gillis gets all the RFAs he wants offersheet or trade....Bernier, Filpulla....and sign them all to big contracts............this way he will take himself out of the Sundin race.

Mats will have 2 possible teams left, Montreal/Toronto......

Bernier is a more proven player than Grab.

But also Grab could have easily turned around and gone to Russia...

That really was my fear. So it compares favorably to the Bernier trade.

Also, you usually have to pay a premium when you're dealing with a rival, like Toronto had to do.

We all know PF's take more time to become consistent. The Sabres were very impatient with him.

Bernier would look beautiful with Latendresse and Maxim Lapierre.

In all honesty, Grabovski's value was that. Every GM in the league knew that Gaineys asking price for Grabovski was huge. Remember he advertised him a couple of times when he called him up. Either way Grabo has HUGE upside, and everyone knows it. He could flourish with Tlusty and Blake.

and didn't he make the mistake that cost the Sharks the series?
