The Preds and the Flyers are also loaded on defense.

My guess is one of the Preds younger blueliners heads to Atlanta.

According to Holmgren, Hatcher is going to start the year on LTIR. He apparently did not pass his end-of-year-physical. Looks like the Flyers will go with:

Timonen-Coburn
Jones-Parent
Vaananen-Eminger
Kukkonen

Something like that. I would hope that we could make a trade for a 2nd pairing guy.

How can Kukkonen be out of favour like that? He is a better defenseman than Väänänen at least.

Preds aren't loaded any more after the Zidlicky trade.

They still have 9ish defensemen who easily could play 15mins a game in the NHL and not look foolish.

A lot of us thought so, too. John Stevens doesn't seem to like Kukkonen very much. I like him. He's defensively sound and he blocks tons of shots. Very good 3rd pairing defenseman. He is limited offensively and can be overmatched by speedy, skilled forwards, though. He's not as physical as Vaananen, either.

Add to Florida that JM is in ongoing negotiations to resign Steve Montador which has about a 50/50 chance of happening now that Olli is gone(Montador didn't get along with Olli).

Lots of teams have a full top seven on defense at this point. It just a question of quality.

For the Isles:

Witt
Martinek
Sutton
Campoli
Streit
Gervais
Hillen
Meyer

Isles have 8 dmen under contract who played in the NHL last season. I think only Hillen and maybe Gervais can go to the AHL without being waived.

Not a strong group, but definitely deep.

What would it take to aquire Ericsson's rights?

Edit, this is coming from a Sabres perspective.

Väänänen looked very cautious in the world champs, so I wouldn't say it's the good old Ossi you're getting...

Kukkonen must have done some funky stuff with Stevens wife...

I guess...

Johnson, JBo, and Doughty on the same team. Pretty much 3 franchise defensemen, and that guy is worried about giving up a PP QB or a defensive defenseman.

Dear Lord, what is this world coming to?

More than likely wouldn't get his rights. He is going to battle for the 8th spot in TC, so he could very well make the team. If not, he will play in GR and see if he gets any call-ups from there during the season. Besides, he is something the Wings have very few of, a big physical kid on the backend, something they have lacked since Fischer.

It is when you're talking FIVE MILLION DOLLARS to Rob "Me Blind" Blake.

I'd take that deal in a second from a Canes perspective.

Zubarev was supposed to come over too if he was needed.

Havelid - a solid #4 on most teams, but he can log top minutes regularly no problem. Strong on the PK.
Enstrom - the kid is a stud, offensively and defensively, and can take massive hits and not miss a beat.
Bogosian - yeah, I think he's not bad, no?
Nikulin - one of the best Russian national defensemen.
Hainsey - not too shabby.
Valabik - he's good, and he's huge and can hit and skate, very responsible, clears the crease. You haven't seen him play, have you?
Popovic - could start on any team in the NHL. He had an ankle injury last year and there is a rumor that his fiancee doesn't want to live in Atlanta so he mysteriously didn't dress most of the season although we had a winning record when he played.
Zubarev is a strong Russian prospect.

Klee? Yeah, he's probably a #7 now
Exelby is horrible. Horrible.
