Any word on Halak's status?

Hey, congrats on Laraque today, big-time muscle. I'm actually in here to inquire about Halak, with Denis coming in what have you heard about his return/non-return to the Habs? I figure Denis being on a two-way deal means they don't count on him to be the main backup, just curious if Halak is likely to remain in Montreal or not. Thanks.

Halak will remain in Montreal until someone is willing to pay a big price for him.

The way Bob Gainey was talking today, he anticipates Denis to be in the AHL...

Unless an offer is on the table to knock our socks off, we will keep Halak until we can't anymore. The habs think very highly of him and probably won't be pressured into just getting rid of him...they're in no rush.

His status is "waiting for UFA" if he wants to go anywhere

Seriously. All he can do is improve his game and also his market value. He is not something I would trade away just yet

Feel free to sign him to an offer sheet that pays him more than $2.6M/season, which entitles Montreal to a 1st and 3rd compensation. I think Gainey would take the picks in that case, but short of that, he's not likely going anywhere with his trade value fairly low.

since the cap went up 2.6 is only a second round pick now.

You know, I contemplated just making it $2.7M, but I thought to myself:
"Nah, they'll understand that I just rounded it off for the sake of not posting a 10 digit number in here."

Apparently not.

An offer sheet with a yearly cap hit of at least $2,615,626, which nets a 1st and 3rd round pick, and I believe Gainey would take the picks. I certainly would, but not for lower compensation than that.

Thanks for the prompt responses.

So he is an RFA now, right? Or does he not enter restricted free agency until next year?

Denis is the third goalie. Destined for Hamilton. I don't think it's the first time we've seen Bob stick some veteran insurance into the system. Halak is staying as number 2... for now. Denis can, however, can make it interesting if he goes to Hamilton and rediscovers the form that made him a 1st round pick.

I wish Halak would hurry up and get signed already. I worry that some team will give him a 2.5 million or so offer sheet, which would either downgrade our goaltending, or muck up our cap situation a bit. Not that I think it will happen, but a team bidding with the Habs for Sundin could put some serious pressure on the Habs best offer to Mats just by handing Halak a decent offer. I'd be a lot happier if he were under contract.

A yet-to-be-proven backup getting an offer sheet would be quite the surprise, although Trader Cliff is making some head scratching moves this week.

Halak will probably be signed in the next week or two. As the ufa scene dies down Gainey will concentrate on his own rfa.

If Halak get's a 2.5 MM offer sheet then kiss him good bye cuz no way Gainey matches that.

If no-one is attempting to give an offer to a 6'6 230lbs young d-man in O'Byrne or in Gorges, I don't see them giving Halak an offer.

I'll sleep better when they're all locked up, but it's not as big a concern as it was for AK46.

I think Gainey would be pissed, but he'd probably match $2.5M as long as it isn't a long, long term contract.

If not, he'd probably still match and then try and trade him for a 2nd to another team that didn't try and screw him over.
