I don't doubt that it's been an awkward couple of days for JP Barry. He's probably been dreading each time the phone rings, because each time he talks to a GM about Mats he's got to stall them without burning a bridge. As anybody who's ever watched an episode of Three's Company knows, you can only stall somebody with wacky shenanigans for so long before the jig is up.

But, it is weeks like this where guys like JP Barry earn their money. This is what he gets paid for.

Sundin has hurt himself only in the sense that a few of the options he had 48 hours ago may have vanished. Some teams that might have been interested in his services have spent money and now have less to offer to Mats. He has probably cost himself a few dollars by hesitating. But I don't think Mats is exactly starving in any case (a lifetime supply of Campbell's Chunky Soup will see to that.)

As for whether Mats has hurt any GMs, I can't help finding a little humor in the fact that this year it is Mike Gillis sitting there staring at the phone waiting to hear whether whether he landed his big fish, after Gillis' role in last year's Nylander fiasco.

Guys like Sakic & Yzerman got something from their teams that Sundin never got from Toronto, The Stanley Cup. Sundin is in the same boat as Ray Bourque, he's going to have to leave if he wants to go out as a champion.

Did Sundin ever have the supporting cast Yzerman or Sakic had?

That's my point. You said he should stay in Toronto. Why should he do that if they never provided him with a chance at the cup? Sakic & Yzerman were given that chance by their teams and their loyalty is deserved. Sundin has no reason to stay loyal to MLSE.

Eklund is dead wrong, as usual. NHL Free agency isn't a socialite gatheting. What the hell does Eklund know about what was said in "talks". He was a free agent, and owed nothing to anybody. If any of those teams held up their whole free agency operation until they heard from him, that's their problem. He has all the leverage because all of those teams want his services, so they'll just have to put up with his current indecision until they either decide not to pursue him anymore, or until he decides on one offer or another. Especially LOL in that rant is Eklund's claim that if a team makes you a big offer you should say yes or no. This kind of comment demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of the concept of free agency. The team making the offer can take it off the table whenever they want, he bears no responsibility to anyone to answer yes or no. As far as I'm concerned he can wait until the trade deadline to sign with a team.

He did have the kind of payroll that most teams dream of.

Payroll means nothing when you spend your money on has beens. Sundin never had anyone around him and everyone knows that.

And yet, the Leafs were consistently a 45-win 100-point team prior to the lockout. Go figure.

he'd be a homeless bum on the street if people were smart enough to just not talk about this guy. but hey... there are plenty of fools in this world who have nothing better to do than to create gossip and make up fantasies on the internet, so i guess they gotta have someone to look up to.
