Why hasn't Gainey Talked to Demitra?

With the Exception of Mats Sundin Pavol Demitra is the best center available right now. If Mats goes to Vancouver, we have no other options. I know Gainey is probably not going to even look at him but imagine if we signed him to a 3 year/ 12 million dollar contract (much better value than Ryder for the same money)
This is what the 09 Habs would look like:

A.Kostityn - Plek - Kovalev
Higgins - Demitra - Tanguay
Laraque/Kostopulous/Latendresse - Koivu - S. Kostityn
Laraque/Kostopulous/Chipchura - Lapierre - Begin/Latendresse

Markov - Komisarek
Hamrlik - Georges
O'Byrne - Bouillion

Price
Halak/Denis

What do you think?

I can't see how Demitra would be a fit for the Habs. I wouldn't be convinced he's better than the players we already have for offense. I guess that if you came to August and had money kicking around and there was no Sundin coming, it couldn't hurt to throw some of it at any good player left on the market, with the provision that it was for just a 1-year term. But clearly that's not going to be what Demitra is looking for right now either.

this is where i tell u the same old...ouch there demitra already got a concussion! but seriously we can't afford to spend another 4 million on demitra over three years which will **** us cap wise. therefore we can't sign our young core higg, pleks, komi, lats, chips and will have lots of trouble resigning HEALTHY (recognize what this means please) veterans kovy, koivu, tanguay

Demitra's an awful fit for the Habs roster, that's why. Gainey's also put all his eggs at this point in the waiting for Sundin's decision(s) basket.

Demitra's not a center.

He can play there in a pinch, but he's not a true center. Part of the problem in Minnesota is that they couldn't find a center to play between Demitra and Gaborik. They tried Demitra between Gaborik and Parrish, but that was a disaster. The best success seemed to take place with Koivu between Demitra/Gaborik.

Yeah, considering the signing spree Gainey has down the road, $4-million/year isn't gonna help things much. Higgins and Plekanic will be able to hold the fort down through the middle.

Because Gainey is looking for an upgrade on his top two centers and a big man down the middle. Sundin more than fits both criteria. Demitra is at best a lateral move on Pleks or Koivu on the top two lines, and unlike those two isn't a true center. Demitra is a good player, but he wouldn't provide the increase in size or talent that Gainey is looking for.

If Demitra is our only UFA option, id rather keep the cap space and make sure we lock up our young players (Komisarek, Plekanec, Higgins) to long-term deals.

Because he's better on the wing than center

Deimtra isn't really a center. He's a winger, just in Minny, since we had a shortage of centers, we forced him to play center
