LOL that's hilarious!

I'm glad Gainey doesn't sign players to offer sheets. It makes you a marked man among GMs

Can we now expect a war of words between Gillis and Davidson?

The Backes/Bernier thing reminds me of Hutchinson/Burleson... except that both NHL players will probably stay on their team unlike the 2 NFL players....

Anyways, now that the Busy period of free agency is probably over and its not gonna cause chaos on the boards...

Every transaction from now on can have its own thread....

The mega merged thread is useful during free agency, the draft, and the trade deadline when there are just too many deals that don't involve montreal to each have their own thread and this causes chaos on the board, but now its fine.

Just remember if it doesn't involve the habs... put OT in front of it.

In order for offer sheets to work, does the actual player have to sign the offer or does the team have to simply give the player an offer?

From a Habs perspective, this is great. I had Bernier pegged for 1-1.5 M, now he'll cost 2.5 M if the Canucks match (which they will).

That's a huge 1-1.5 M more, especially if Demitra is really signing with the Canucks for 4M per. By my count, this means the Sundin offer basically has to be reduced by at least 500 K per year, if not a full 1 M, unless Vancouver wants to have a team that has zero wiggle room under the cap this season.

My thinking exactly. Every little bit helps. Thanks St. Louis!

****ing awesome, St. Louis.

That is why Gainey doesn't want to send offer sheets. It starts a war. If Gainey doesn't send offer sheets abroad, it decreases the chance of an offer sheet getting sent our way in retribution.

If they match this offer sheet, and sign Demitra to a 4 M contract, the Canucks will be just about 10 M under the salary cap. They also need to add another 1-2 players to round out their roster and will need wiggle room. So they will definitely need to lower their offer to Sundin, probably closer to 8.5 or 9 M. Too bad St. Louis didn't offer Bernier 4 M!

The worst part of this offer sheet is that its a 1 year deal. Bernier was scheduled to play with the Sedins next year, which means he was going to put up pretty good numbers ... so that means Bernier will be expecting a raise again next year.

Payback or not, Steve Bernier is the big winner here.

He get a big contract and he dosen't feel bad about it because he never played with the Canucks.
