Steven Truscott Compensated $6.5 M

http://lfpress.ca/newsstand/2008/07/07/6088661.html

Steven Truscott, the youngest person in Canada to face the hangman's noose is being compensated $6.5 million for his "miscarriage of justice."

Ontario Attorney General Chris Bentley made the announcement this morning at Queens Park.

Truscott's wife, Marlene, is also being compensated $100,000.

Truscott was only 14 when he was convicted in 1959 of murdering his 12-year-old classmate, Lynne Harper.

Both of them lived with their families at the Clinton airforce base, now known as Vanastra, in Huron County.

Truscott was sentenced to hang in Goderich in September, 1959. His case became a lightning rod in capital punishment debates that would follow.

Truscott's sentence was commuted to life five months later. His conviction was upheld by the Supreme Court of Canada in 1967 in a split decision.

He was paroled after 10 years in prison in 1969.

Truscott lived a quiet life in Guelph working as a millwright until 1997, when he asked for DNA tests to exonerate him.................

Last summer, the Ontario Court of Appeal acquitted Truscott calling his conviction "a miscarriage of justice.

No amount of money can make up for the years he lost and the fact that some people will still treat him like a criminal but hopefully he can get some enjoyment out of the money.

Good for him, but an utter disgrace, and no amount of money makes up for something like that.

So did they ever find the "real" killer, or was the case never solved?

What was the evidence that finally cleared Truscott, and removed any doubt whatsoever of his innocence?

As far as I know they haven't found the real killer. His "life sentence" lasted 10 years before he was paroled and he later asked for DNA tests which exhonerated him.

That's exactly what I was thinking.

I'm glad he got compensation but he should have gotten more then 6.5 million though.

The truth always comes out in the end!

I don't think they ever indicted anyone. The documentary I saw made mention of a couple of suspects:

the journalists uncovered old military files on Alexander Kalichuk, a heavy drinker with a history of sexual offences who lived within a 20-minute drive of the base. The air force sergeant had come to police attention after trying to lure a 10-year-old girl into his car about three weeks before Harper disappeared.

Another man, an electrician with a conviction for ****, worked regularly at the base and knew the Harpers.

He was never legally declared innocent. No DNA evidence was retained and therefore it's impossible to declare him innocent at this point unlike in the Morin and Milgard cases. The conviction was squashed, and he was ruled not guilty, but legally it doesn't necessarily mean he's innocent.

I heard on the radio this morning that the family of the girl do not agree and are trying to get the compensation blocked.

It's unfortunate that there probably will never be closure in this case. The odds of conclusively proving who actually did it after all of these years and without DNA evidence are slim to none. I believe that Kalichuk had a car that was similar to the one that Truscott says Lynne Harper got into after he dropped her off, and he seems a likely suspect, but he died in 1975.

Yeah, the Harper family still believes Truscott is the killer. It'd be a shame if they were right. Only Truscott knows for sure, and he'll probably take that to the grave.
