OT: Capitals Re-Sign Fedorov to a 1-Year Deal & Laich to a 3-Year Deal

http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=242906&l...headlines_main

Quote:
The Washington Capitals have re-signed forward Sergei Fedorov to a one-year $4 million contract.

The 17-year NHL veteran, a trade deadline acquisition from the Columbus Blue Jackets, was a key member of the Capitals improbable run to the playoffs last season.

In the final 18 regular season games, Fedorov contributed two goals and 11 assists and chipped in with five points in Washington's seven-game, first-round loss to the Philadelphia Flyers.
4M$/1year... What do you guys think?

Edit: Also signed Brooks Laich...
http://blog.washingtonpost.com/capit...ree_years.html
Quote:
Forward Brooks Laich has avoided arbitration and re-signed with the Caps for three seasons. Laich will earn $1.7 million, $2.1 million and $2.4 million.

Fedorov's been great with the Caps and he's surely a very good influence on Ovy. Good catch for them!

At one year and when you have the cap space, 4M isn't really that big of a deal. Good signing for them.

Washington will probably be close to the cap when they'll re-sign Laich, Fehr and Gordon..

Who is dumb enough to give Federov 4 million. The Caps lost on this pick up.

A lot of teams over paid this year but the ones that made great deals for reasonable amount of cash will win the race. The Cap might be rising but you can not be dumb with your money.

Teams I considered to do quite well
Oilers
Red Wings
Habs
Pens-to an extent, realized they had to keep what they could and did not overpay for Hossa. Even though he might have picked the Red wings either way.

Just to name a few

1 year deal makes it a good deal for the Caps.

I was hoping we'd pick up Fedorov at the trade deadline. He would have been a PERFECT fit and he was cheap to get.

Some RSL teams were ready to offer him more than 4M. Fedorov just wanted to spend couple seasons more in the NHL, before returning home. 2M in today's overinflated free agent market can land you a 3rd liner at best.

A couple of things.

1. You are not thinking that the $4m figure came out of the blue, do you? Fedorov's agent has had more than a week to gauge interest from other NHL teams as the Caps were waiting for the Green and Laich contracts to be settled before finalizing a deal with Fedorov. This deal, at least, was on the table elsewhere for Fedorov had he wanted it.

2. Probably unknown to you is that Chris Clark may already be out for the season and his career over. After damaging a groin tendon in November, last season, he has played a few shifts of one game. He has tried to skate. He has tried rest. The latest report is that he hopes to start skating but he is still too sore.

With the Captain out and possibly gone, Fedorov makes even more sense.

I think you would have to have closer knowledge of the situation in Washington to understand the impact that he had on the team and the quality of his play.

McPhee said. "The way the players talked about him in our season-end meetings made it clear that this is a guy we have to have back. In talking to Sergei, he was pretty firm in what he wanted and what his value was. He's been a great player in this league, and we showed him respect and made it work."

more....Fedorov, who has credited the trade to Washington with reinvigorating his career, skated with Ovechkin and Semin in May at the world championships in Canada, where Russia claimed the gold medal.

Some deals just fall into place unexpectedly. This is one of those cases of a pure short term rental hitting the sweet spot.
