Looks like it was Sjostrom, and a pick for Montoya

Which is why I really hope the Rangers do not select another goalie in the 1st round in my lifetime.

Yeah, it's almost always a mistake. Goalies bust so much you should NEVER, EVER select one in the top 10.

Oh Olesz how I wanted you that day.

IMO another stupid move on Sathers part. I refuse to believe that if he was moved earlier, like after Hanks 1st or 2nd season, we woulda gotten more for him. Freddie Sjostrom for a potential franchise goalie?

Here's one where I agree with you, Radek.

Whoooooooo cares........the Franschise goalie is in NY and will be there for a loooooong time SO it doesnt matter right now anyways

Valliquette is a good veteran backup and Wikman has skills..........Zaba is not bad too.................

They have time to draft that goalie at some pt .............look around the leaugue......who has a great goalie prospect in the AHL?

Stupid drafting always matters. Your comment reminded me of the thread the other day that proposed that the acquisition of Zherdev makes the drafting of Jessiman moot, to me a mind boggling assessment.

well sather offically blew this trade and it is a Maloney steal. Gratton sucked but was a body in hartford. We got a 4th liner with no hands and a 5th round pick for a goalie that we should have never drafted and will be in the NHL this season(imo) and if we traded a year earlier could have gotten a lot more for.

Montoya had a hell of a track record that year, great in College and absolutely dominating at the WJC. We knew Blackie had the injuries so this was a good safe pick.

If anything, Sather waited too long to deal him once Henke stepped onto the scene. But I understand why he did wait as long as he did. Btw, I wanted Olesz too. Who was it on here that was dying for Radulov? That wouldve been the money pick.

Whatever, Gratton is small potatoes and we dont have to worry about goalies right now.

That we have a franchise goalie is hardly relevant. It's about asset management, and we didn't manage well at all in this case.

Maybe Maloney is going to give us Carcillo or Turris for free?

Carey Price, Roberto Luongo, and Rick DiPietro seem to be working out...

Don't forget MAF, Lehtonen, Leclaire, Blackburn (he was good till freak injury), Thibault, also Bernier was picked #11 and he looks like he will be solid.

in fact if you look at the top 10 picks of being goalies there is a good chance that they will become really good goalies that pan out in the NHL.

Without getting into the general analysis, I never thought Blackburn looked any good at all.

Let's wait and see if Montoya ever amounts to anything. If he does, the trade sucked. If he doesn't, the draft pick of him sucked. It sucks either way. But who the **** cares? Move on already.

Had there not been salary issues, Montoya would have been the backup to Lundqvist last season. He was not traded earlier because he was expected to fill that role (before the gigantic signings of Drury and Gomez). It was the large money signings that were the problem. Before that, he had not played a near full season injury-free to get reasonable assets in return. Not sure it was terrible mismanagement. It was unfortunate, but when you have the opportunity to get both Drury and Gomez, some other assets can fall by the wayside.

Best post in the thread, and possibly the only sensible one.

You have to look at the Rangers situation at the time. Henrik had never even set foot in the NHL and Blackburn was unlikely to ever become healthy again. I am not a fan of drafting goalies high (and I had a minor freak out when we took Montoya) but I do understand why we did it. As for not trading Montoya soon enough, he was kept around as insurance and by the time he was viewed as expendable he had been injured numerous times and his played was marred by inconsistency. I am not sure there was ever a time between when we needed him and when his value dropped. Its always a risk, but an acceptable one.

Me neither, but the Rangers organization really blew it BAD with that kid. What goalie prospect has EVER been called up to the NHL at the age of 18 and looked good and ready to be there. He could have been great and probably incurred that freak injury because of the organization allowing him to come into the NHL so damn early.

I think Radulov was a favorite of Larry Melnyk.

to me.....
Lenevau gone, gratton gone...hossa gone...montoya gone...

leneveau, gratton, hossa and montoya for freddie sjostrom...

anyone have any info so i can stop scratching my head

it was a gift pretty much. The Rangers know they didn't need Montoya and knew that they had kept him too long and his value was down so they basically dumped him.
