When should Gagner be promoted?

When should Sam Gagner take over the No.1 center position from Horcoff? And who would be the Ideal linemate for Gagner-Hemsky during that time?

I would love a line like this:

Eberle-Gagner-Hemsky, I think I found that in a sig of a poster here.

Do you also think that Gagner and Hemsky will elevate their games to "elite" status if they play with each other?

thoughts?

2 seasons (including this one). Assistant in 4, Captain in 6.

Horcoff will be our number one center this season and the two that follow it at minimum.
I don't like the looks of your Eberle - Gagner - Hemsky only because Hemsky has stated (and we have seen) that he prefers to pass to a left handed shot.

A few years down the road I hope our top two centers are:
Gagner
Horcoff

But for the next three seasons I think we'll see:
Horcoff
Gagner

Gagner will force his way in 1/2 to 3/4 of the way through this season. He and Hemsky are simply better together than Hemsky and Horcoff.

This coming season is Horcoff's at the #1 C position but Gags could conceivable steal the spot from him.

I don't know if I would be so sure of that yet. Horcoff and Hemsky had great chemistry last season until Horc was sidelined.

That being said, I think you'll see him on the top line within the next two seasons though.

Is Eberle going to be that good?

He definitely has the potential to be as long as they develop him right. I'm not sure if he will be a top line winger but could probably fill the second line position nicely.

Gagner will be promoted when he proves he is worthy of the promotion.

Let's not try and map out his development. He'll get there when he gets there.

When he is better at being a #1 centre than Shawn Horcoff, which, besides scoring, also often means playing against #1 centres on opposing teams.

For sure. It is extremely unlikely it will be this year. He might get playing time with Hemsky, but he'll be there to slaughter weaker competition and will not be the top line forward. Thousands will be fooled, however.

I'm hopeful that MacT will wreak havoc on the boards on some home games by throwing out a unit of Gagner-Horcoff-Hemsky!

If so, how come Penner and Hemsky both had their stats go into the ******* once Horcoff was injured?

Gagner should get promoted when he's ready. First things first, lets see if he can legitimately outscore crappy opposition and go from there.

The chemistry they enjoy on the PP will expand to 5-on-5 rapidly. They read of each other more effectively.

He will be ready then, thats what I'm saying. Not that we must force him in.

Chemistry is nice, but I'd rather not watch our number one line score 70 goals and be on for 100...

Gagner has a long way to go still before he's that guy, and I see no reason to rush him... let him dominate the softies for a while and go from there.

Agree completely...you could see the chemistry come together in the last 6-7 games.

I think Sam will surprise with how quickly he gets there.

People are jumping the gun on Gagner. Im a fan.. but he is in no way ready to take over top line duty. If he puts up 60pts this year i'll be thrilled.

I would play Horcoff between Hemsky and Cole this season however, I hope they all stay healthy and tear it up:

On the PP:

Cole
Horcoff

Hemsky

Visnovsky

Souray

IMO that would be an ideal powerplay.

Not yet. Relax over eager, over hyping as usual Oiler fans. The kid played better than we all thought but c'mon.

Replace Gagner with cole and that is your ideal powerplay. Gagner can tear it up on the powerplay. he has the mindset to make plays on the powerplay and with the extra time and space you have to set up, that is an opportunity that you can't pass up with him. cole is great for 5-on-5 because of his driving to the net ability and hard work on the boards. but seriously think of it, gagner and hemsky on the halfboards setting up souray visnovsky, and horcoff? now that is a powerplay.

Depends on what happens with Horcoff and his contract. I wonder if Gagner's development will have anything to do with what the Oilers offer Horcoff and whether or not they resign him.

Gagner got killed 5v5 last year. Unless he makes a quantum leap in the off season he's not close to going up against the top dogs of the NHL.
