Good signing for the Moose... isn't he like an AHL allstar every year?

I would say he is the best AHL player out there, however, this contract may be one way. Does anyone know how his defensive skills are? He may be a 4th line addition.

This makes no sense to me.

Krog has gone on record as saying it's NHL or Europe this season and he's officially done playing his last game in the AHL.

Head scratcher.

Someone on the trade/free agent board was saying it is indeed a one way deal.

FWIW, the Trade Rumours forum is adamant that he must've signed a one-way contract.

Makes little sense to me, as I don't see him bumping either Wellwood, Kesler, or Johnson in the depth chart.

I suspect that if he is indeed signed one-way, it might be the end for one of Pettinger or Pyatt, as they are slightly overpriced for their role.

Pyatt's making more money and i'd assume has more value, therefore, he's probably gone.

I'm just speculating though.

I agree with the general consensus this is probably a cost saving move with one of Pettinger or Pyatt being sent out for picks in order to open up around $500,000 in additional cap-room for the Sundin contract. As it stands now if we sign Sundin we'll be smack up against the cap, and possibly a couple hundred thousand dollars over. Obviously Gillis isn't a big fan of guys like Brown, Rypien or Jaffray.

Born in Fernie, BC... maybe it's a two-way deal to live out his childhood dream.

I thought Krog signed with Severstal Cherepovets of the Russian Super League this past May. Wouldn't that preclude him from signing with the Canucks, given the latest "agreement" between the NHL and the Russian League?
Even if I am wrong about that, this signing makes no sense. How does Krog garner a one-way deal? We aren't exactly loaded with offensive skill, but I still don't think he is good enough to bump any of our top 13 forwards.
Strange.

It could be the sign and trade one of our overpriced bottom 6 players... or... Gillis thought to himself, "You know what this team needs? More depth!"

Remember when this guy was touted as the next big thing after he won his Hobey Baker? He was the best NCAA prospect coming out of college, followed in a close second by Steve Kariya.

since Krog is a center, it would make more sense for him to bump Johnson out of a spot.

Maybe this is a prelude to Cowan being bought out/removed?

Also,

KHL: We poached Radulov

NHL: Oh yeah? WELL WE JUST TOOK KROG FROM YA. HOW DO YA LIKE THEM APPLES?

Johnson is going to be in the line-up guaranteed, you don't sign a 1.2 million dollar player to sit in the press-box unless he pulls a Chouinard. Also, Johnson is an excellent PKer and lead forwards with blocked shots.

If it is in fact a one-way deal it has to be a part of something bigger otherwise it makes no sense. That would give the Canucks 14 forwards (including Raymond), 12 on one way deals (Wellwood and Raymond being the two that aren't).

I guess the other option is that the team is giving him a chance to earn a roster spot, then if he doesn't they'll let him 'defect' and go play in Russia.

To play in Manitoba most of the year? More likely a one way deal to live out his childhood dream

I agree with others, I'm not sure what the deal is here either. Gillis has spoken of his desire to acquire versatile players, and Krog is a good fill in at any position on the 4th line. Still, limits us a lot unless there is not something else on the horizon.

He a bunch of awards in the AHL last year, so its worth a shot especially if it comes to the expense of Pyatt. Pyatt doesn't play with grit on a regular basis anyways and I doubt Krog's production will be much less (Pyatt 37pts two years in a row).

Awards (07-08):
Les Cunningham Plaque (MVP)
John B. Sollenberger Trophy (Leading scorer)
Willie Marshall Award (Leading goal scorer)
Jack Butterfield Trophy (Calder Cup playoffs MVP)
First All-Star Team (Center)

Except Johnson is far better than Krog, defensively at least. Krog might have a bit more offense, but it's negligible considering the role either would be expected to play.

Could just be the 13th forward with Wellwood starting in Manitoba as he's on a two-way. It's difficult to speculate now though, we'll see how it all plays out in training camp.

Yeah, that's not going to happen.

Unless Kesler is being moved to move out some salary or bring in some more offense? Johnson steps up and takes his role as checking centre and Krog is the 4th line centre?

Kind of a confusing move right now...something else must be in the works.

the fact of the matter is he's going to be paid 1.2 million to play on the 4rth line when there are cheaper alternatives. Who knows, he might just get waived to get some extra cap room. The suggestion has as much merit as the speculation surrounding Pyatt who is at least a proven producer with the team to some extent.

Does seem like an odd deal. Maybe Krog is the designated 13th forward?

It's a move that almost belongs in the WWDD? thread.

Maybe this was a Vigneault inspired signing?

well, who isn't better than Krog in the lineup. it doens't make any sense to move anybody on the lineup unless it was for a salary dump and it's not as economically feasible to have an expensive 4rth line.

I'm confused here...do you honestly think Gillis would sign Johnson only to waive him a week later? Or am I reading your posts wrong?
