Plan B

Radulov's leaving clears up A LOT of future cap space. He would be looking to make money around the same as Erat and Legwand after this season....$4.5M

So, Vermette has asked for a trade out of Ottawa, he is looking for a long term deal at around $3.5 that is with the taxes in Ottawa. Why not trade for Vermette using whatever combination of picks or role player...sign him to a deal that would take the place of the money that Radulov would have signed for and be on our marry way.

Vermette

2006-07 Ottawa Senators NHL 77 19 20 39 52 20 2 3 5 6
2007-08 Ottawa Senators NHL 81 24 29 53 51 4 0 0 0 4

Radulov

2006-07 Nashville Predators NHL 64 18 19 37 26 4 3 1 4 19
2007-08 Nashville Predators NHL 81 26 32 58 44 6 2 2 4 6

POILE DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! With the rest of the division getting that much stronger you need to step up to the plate with a PROVEN replacement!!!!!!!

The question is what would we have to give up to get Vermette ? ... I'm sure it would have to be something pretty decent, like more than Klein/Koistinen, PROBABLY Franson

As a Jackets fan I hate saying this (especially since I want him over here so very very very very much), but depending on who you're willing to give up y'all may have the best shot at Vermette. Ottawa badly wants a puck-mover, and you guys seem to be pretty well stocked in that department.

I figure it'd be a better option than hoping for Tavares, at any rate.

I was hoping that last season at the trade deadline we would've traded for Vermette. His speed, penalty kill ability and faceoff success would be good addition to our team.

With Radulov likely gone now...according to all the recent reports of him at the Russian camp.

What do our lines look like now?

Dumont-Arnott-Hornqvist
Erat-Legwand-Peverly
Tootoo-Nichol-Fiddler
Smithson-Bonk-Ortmeyer
Philstrom-Gratton

other options:
Wilson
O'Reilly
Jones
Klein as a forward?
HLAVAC!!! cheap and already knows the system!!!!

That top 6 is kind of scary for now? at little more security would be nice?

If Peverley makes the team out of camp, it's gonna be a LONG season.

Erat-Arnott-Dumont (the DEA Line)
Hörnqvist-Legwand-OPEN- The open area will be filled by Jones, Wilson, Videll *fingers crossed*, or someone acquired via trade (perhaps Jussi Jokinen?).
Fiddler-Bonk-Smithson/Ortmeyer- this is our shutdown line. It'll be like a penalty kill when they're on the ice, but I think we can manage.
Pihlström/Gratton-Nichol-Tootoo- This is our agitator/energy line (as if you couldn't tell). All four of these guys like to play physical and could actually pitch in a good 30-35 goals combined. Plus, at least three of those guys can fill in at higher levels for short stints if necessary.

The defense has undergone a big change with the departure of Zidlicky, partly because it takes away our PPQB and partly because we no longer have to see Suter and Zidlicky flat-out suck as a pairing.

Weber-Suter
Hamhuis-De Vries
Zanon/Koistinen-Klein

My opinion is that Poile is planning to have Radulov on the roster next year and will not make a move. Maybe he swings a deal when Radulov doesn't show, but I doubt that.

I have my doubts as to player pickups, because Poile would have to get rid of say Smithson, Ortmeyer, etc. I don't see him getting rid of them.

Gee, aren't you just full of optimism! <_<

I really hope Poile isn't dense enough to expect Radulov to honor his contract. He is LONG gone. I really don't think he cares that he just got suspended by the IIHF, he just wants to play for Salavat.

We don't have to move Smithson or Ortmeyer to bring in another player. We just sign Peverley to a two-way deal and we're set.

Peverley is subject to waivers, FYI

So long as he signs a two-way deal, I don't see any problem. There's gonna be very little interest i Peverley on the waiver wire.

Except that if we needed one top-6 forward before Radulov left, now we need two. Hornqvist can only account for one of those spots, so we still need to do something, and I don't think Peverly is the solution. Hlavac might be a cheap short term solution, but it would be nice to see Poile make a bigger move.

Hornqvist was supposed to be that other top six forward. Now that Radulov is gone, we need ONE top six forward.

What are the chances that DP does nothing and just waits to see how prospects like Hornqvist, Jones and Philstrom perform?

Hlavac made 700k last season, so if we give him the equal amount to Radulov's contract....who would be in favor?

What other options are there, besides prospects??? Don't say Tootoo or Fiddler!!! They tried them both last season and it didn't work!!!

Never said he was- what I was saying is that we can sign Peverley to a two-way deal and put him in Milwaukee to start the year. I highly doubt there would be any interest in him on waivers. That would pave the way to bring in Jokinen or whoever our top six forward is going to be.

Jan is good insurance

I think we need to sign Hlavac for cheap, or at least invite him to camp and see if he will come.

He might get a TC invite. I kinda expect him to sign in Russia.

I like the idea of bringing Gelinas in unsigned, and if he's good enough to make the team, send Ortmeyer to the minors.

Dumont-Arnott-Erat
Hörnqvist-Legwand-XXX
Fiddler-Bonk-Pihlström
Gelinas-Nichol-Tootoo
Gratton, Smithson

Wilson is a center and has a great opportunity to develop at Boston University next season. At BU, Wilson will center the top line in arguably the toughest conference in the NCAA, he will get to center the top line for the US WJC team and probably be named team captain, and at the end of the season...he can join the Admirals or the Predators to start his professional career! Next season there is even a spot open for him to play center as Bonk's contract expires!!!

The wrong move would be to throw Wilson into the Nashville lineup to start this season at a new position (wing - Legwand cannot play on the wing) where he would have tremendous expectations placed on him to fill a top six role immediately. He still has a couple of areas of his game that need to be refined (skating primarily) and the college environment provides a great place for him to do that working with a great coach (Jack Parker) and all the support needed from both the Predators and USA Hockey throughout the season.

Sadly, I agree. Parker is a phenomial coach unlike Dick Umile (sp?) at UNH he can coach players for the NHL.

It would be silly to move Wilson off of center at this point....

or to rush his development by using him as a stop-gap solution for our lack of quality depth at forward. Poile needs to take a long-term view here and only put Wilson in the lineup if he (a) can play center and (b) is physically and mentally ready for NHL caliber competition
