I think the choice for Dawes came down to asking for more (just under a mil) and having to face the possibility of getting sent down due to cap constraints, or doing this deal. Now he is a bargain with enough potential to probably stick around all season. More money or guarentee yourself an NHL spot. Let's not underestimate what kind of a statement he is making.

What does Shanahan do? Is Shanahan more valuable to this team in the long run and for next season more-so than Prucha? I think not.

If not Shanahan, who do you propose replaces Prucha's minutes and spot on this team? The majority of the players still available will not serve more purpose to this team than Prucha.

This is an excellant point and Dawes agent deserves a ton of credit giving his client the right advice...

when did I say I wanted Shanny? In fact I absolutely don't want Shanny. I would like to see Drury on a wing, and Dubi on second line center. so your top 6 forwards would be Dru, Gom, nas, Dub, Daw, Zher. than third third line could be a mix of Korps, Fritsche, Cally or Fritsche-Ani-Cally. Whichever rook is ready.

still would keep the team young and feisty. and no matter who is there they will not turn the puck over or fall as much as prucha almost guaranteed. in fact I don't think anybody on the team turned the puck over as much as prucha did per game. Every time he touches the puck, he gets touched falls down and loses the puck.

That's according to NHLSCAP.com. They're usually pretty reliable.

AMAZING DEAL!!

imo dawes is going to light it up this season....he is a natural offensive player who will thrive in this new type of style......

on prucha:
he is a one-dimensional, redundant part......we saw hollweg traded because he was the same thing....IMO he will be traded very soon as he wont be on the top two line because he doesnt mesh with drury, and he wont make the 1st line with the talent, plus he shouldnt play on the bottom 6 because of players like callahan, betts, sjostrom, voros, rissmiller, fritsche and korpikoski are all more well-rounded players than prucha and play their ROLE better.....prucha would need to be on a team where he gets top 6 minutes and plays with a big body....

1:57PM New York Rangers sign RFA forward Nigel Dawes to a 2-year contract. TSN says its a 2 year deal i thought it can only be a 1 year for QO?

two years at 600k would be a huge steal

I think the QO is one year automatically, but you can negotiate the contract above and beyond both in amount and time.

If it is 2 years at $600k, that's got to be the cap friendliest deal EVER.

The biggest plus, other than he's a great kid, is that this times nicely with the end of Naslund's deal. So, we don't have to worry about fitting both Nazzy and Dawes under the '09-'10 cap.

I want to get my hopes up but...

John Dellapina reports its a 1yr deal in the 600k neighbourhood.
TSN reports its a 2yr deal, no word on money.
NYR reports they signed Dawes.

Lets wait til we get something official before celebrating an awesome deal?

You guys all need to work on your reading comprehension.

Dellapina said "The club will announce sometime today that it has re-signed Nigel Dawes to a one-year contract in the $600,000 range."

That could be anything from $600,000 to $699,999. Which, given the comparables and what Dawes has actually accomplished (not what most of you think he's capable of... I've seen people here giving him $1.2m and over... for what I ask?!) is right about in line.

Would this be a one-way contract then?

Well, speaking as one who predicted a salary in that range, the answer is simple - to lock him up for two years. On a one year deal, I absolutley agree that $1MM+ would be silly, but if you get him to give up one or more years of UFA status, that's gonna cost you. If you do believe he's capable of scoring 30, it makes a lot of fiscal sense to lock him up at a lower price if you can. 'Cause if he signs for one year at $625K (or whatever it turns out to be) and then goes 30-30-60, you ain't getting him back for less than $4MM as an UFA next year.

I wasn't a big fan of Dawes based on the few games I saw in HFD, but when he came up and stuck last year, I have to say he showed me something. I think his potential is worth a couple more hundred thou this year, if you can lock him up for multiple years. I look at it as risk/reward. The risk isn't that high - but the reward could be.

I believe if he's signed a one year deal, he'd be a UFA next season, like Lundqvist was last year. Unless that was because of the club taking him to arbitration.
