Freddie Sjostrom is apparently more clearheaded than we are -- he is not seeking a big raise over last year's $800,000 salary, he is actually ready to accept a cut to $650,000 in exchange for a two-year deal, with negotiations over those terms still ongoing.

if Sjostrom signed a one-year contract, would he be a UFA at the end of the season? If so, I'd worry about a player who's willing to take a paycut and do it for two seasons since that tells me he has little confidence in his abilities to be something more than a fourth liner, if even that.

OR, it's a way to guarantee himself a $1.3MM contract, and give himself a chance to prove his abilities on a team where he's likely to get more ice time.

He's under 27, so I believe he would still be a RFA. But, he has to pass through waivers if he gets sent to AHL.

It's interesting to note that neither he nor the Rangers choose arbitration for him. I take that as a sign the Rangers gave hims some prelim #s that he was ok with.

I think he would be a RFA next season as well...

I think the paycut has to do with the fact he knows he probably won't get waived because of his contract.....(like korpikoski who is probably ticketed to hartford no matter what he does in camp)

Prucha and his contract are going to be gone by the time camp roles around...

I wonder if a team like the kings would be interested...they need to get to the cap floor and have picks to spare...

Players coming off their entry level contract are not eligible for arbitration.

I don't think Sjo was in his ELC. According to nhlscap.com he was arbitration eligible.

But what's to worry about with a 650k contract? If he doesn't cut it send him to Hartford...or trade him to a team looking for skaters. From what I've seen of him he's got wheels and looks to have decent hands. I'd lock him up for the 2 years and take my chances.

That's right--I forgot, coming off your first contract and under 25 would be not eligible--so he would be arbitration eligible.

A 650k/year contract in exchange for 2 years? i think that is a very fair trade considering the cap constraints of this team. 150k isn't alot in terms of space but if a player is willing to play for less then you have to give it to him. He is obviously happy to be in NYC. Give it to Fast Freddie!

I read somewhere that the central registry at the NHL is seriously back-logged. I am sure we will get more details soon.
