He's made somewhere in the neighborhood of 40 million dollars playing hockey, I don't get why the heck he needed loans in the first place.

"speculative investments", it's a trap far richer people (and organisations) than him has fallen into.

Buy some real estate expected to rise in value, get a loan with that real estate as security, buy some more real estate, rinse and repeat.

Well known way for the rich to get richer. As long as you sell in time that is ...

There are some benefits to having a mortgage in the US as opposed to buying out right. As long as he stayed liquid, it isn't such a bad plan. If you over extend, I could see where you might get into trouble.

Rich people do not have cash. In fact, that's why they're richer than you and me. They're capital rich and cash poor. If they're not, they're they won't be rich for much longer.

Who knows where his assets are and what they're tied up in. I am curious to know now though.

Well, when you figure in taxes and agent fees and such, I think the actual amount a professional sports player actually gets to pocket is somewhere between 30-50% of their salary.

So combine that with expenses - and assume a few bad investments, it can happen. I'm sure the timing is because he just signed a 4M/1yr deal - at least he's still got income to help pay it off.

I think he signed with Washington so he could run into the Russian Embassy whenever his creditors try to track him down.

Easy now. A friendly pointer to correct the spelling is only a help.
If someone did a search on "Fedorov" he wouldn't have found this thread, would he?
Now "Learn how to spell", that's just rude, I agree.
