Matvichuk?

Would anyone have any interest in signing Richard Matvichuk? I do believe he still is a free-agent and would he be interested in playing in his hometown?

This would also make Staios expendable and we can package him later on in the offseason.

I believe he can be the shutdown defenseman we are seeking.

thoughts?

I'll pass. I dont like the Idea of us trading Staios. I think he is a great shut down defencemen and is a great leader for us.

Matvichuk isn't good enough to play in the NHL, Staios is.

Ten years ago-- yes. Right now, not so much.

The point really doesn't need to be elaborated on - Staios is a far better player at this point in time than Matvichuk. Heck, Matvichuk hasn't played a meaningful NHL game since 2005-06 and most New Jersey fans were looking to trade him during that season too.

I would have been fine if the Oilers went with Matvichuk as their 7th defenceman but Strudwick makes more sense given that he can jump in at forward and he also provides a physical presence.

Matvichuk is just as physical.

Have you seen Matvichuk play in the last decade? The guy can't skate to save his life and he hasn't laid out a big hit since about 2003.

Matvichuk is done. He was a pain in the ass all those playoffs against Dallas, but the writing's on the wall.

I wouldn't mind Vishnevsky off the Devils, though.

Matvichuk was actually decent towards the end of his first season with the Devils and had a shockingly good playoffs after playing one regular season game in 06-07. He was a shot blocking machine against Tampa Bay (whoops, wrote Detroit by mistake).

But it was clear the Devils thought he really regressed by the 07 training camp and he didn't have a prayer at making a team that included one-eyed Colin White, Sheldon Brookbank, Mike Mottau, Andy Greene, an ineffective Vitaly Vishnevski and other awful or misfit dmen. I don't think he even played well in Lowell or stood out from another bad blueline. In 06-07 it was cap hell that kept him out of the lineup, 07-08 was a different story.

I doubt he gets a one way contract. I'm not sure he'd play in the AHL again instead of just retiring.

Vishnevski would be very, very, very available. He'd be available for future considerations. Please take him. Now.

I was preaching Matvichuk during the season last season after we had lost Souray for the year, and our D was light on physicality and toughness.

But now with Strudwick as our #7 D and Peckham and Chorney waiting in the wings we don't need his services anymore.

I could beat Matvichuk one on one. If you guys complained about Cross you would be doing backflips out of anger with matvichuk. Cross was better with Edmonton then Matvichuk would be today.

I agree with the most of the other posters. A big no thanks on Matvichuk. Washed , up, done like dinner, should retire, no mobility anymore are all good expressions to describe him. This is a non-starter and non-issue IMO.

Why in the world would you want to trade Staios? With his Leadership(HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE CAPTAIN) look what the Oilers did after Morea went down last year.
They players all said Staios led them. Hemsky also said we need a tough Guy. But Lowe has yet to deliver.

I think the oilers are done for offseason moves....and with our depth on D we really don't need an aging Vet who is close to done.

As everyone stated, a definate no to this question. Matvichuk has had back problems and has been done for quite some time. If this was around 2000 i'd say yes but he's been finished for 2-3 years atleast.

what would you offer?

also, about matvichuk. at this point in his career, he is going to be an AHL defenseman at best. From years of seeing of him, i can tell you he was slow when he was good. Now just imagine him when he is not good.
