He's been playing like a legit #2 regardless of who's been injured. It's not about the ice time he's playing, but how he plays when he gets it. Hell, if it were only about getting time then he's been playing like the top defenseman in the league. Some players rise to their new roles and fill them, others don't. It's the same situation with Boyes- he was given a chance on a team with holes at wing and he filled the role well.
