Nashville Predators President of Hockey Operations/General Manager David Poile announced today that the club has agreed to terms on a two-year contract with restricted free agent Rich Peverley and has signed goaltender Pekka Rinne to a one-year contract extension that begins in 2009-10.

So he is basically making 25,000 and 50,000 more than the minimum....okay...I'll take that. He isn't going to hurt us to send down to the minors if need be, although, he would have to pass through waivers (who cares...)

It's a two-way contract this year so we won't be paying him an NHL salary in the minors until next season, when he's more likely to make the roster. He'll have to clear waivers going down but he should clear with ease.
Note to David Poile: When, in another thread, I suggested that I'd rather have Rich in the top 6 than Glenn Murray, it was merely rhetoric....hyperbole....bs even, to emphasize the dislike for picking up a certain other player. If it sparked your imagination, please, please put out the fire.
Point noted then. That said, I don't see this as much of a problem. As pointed out, Ortmeyer, Bonk, Fiddler are all expiring after this year, and I'm not sure what the status is on Nichol and Smithson (I assume they will be up as well).

Yes we have guys contracts expiring next year.
But that doesn't mean we just stick with the same thing by replacing them with a lateral move in Peverley.
Well you do need the lower level guys and he will be nice and cheap. Which makes him an upgrade over the guys we have now with all other things being equal.

Yes, Rich Peverley is a quality depth player that makes our team better than we would be without him. That was honestly one of our biggest organizational problems last season was a lack of quality depth players due to the ownership bungle that took place last summer. Peverley was a player that showed signs of improvement during each of his recalls and appears ready to challenge for a full-time spot in Nashville (on roster, not necessarily in every game).
Injuries, poor play, and other reasons for holding a player out of the lineup are a given during the course of an 82 game season. You need players that are able to fill those holes that are created in the lineup. Your dismissal of Peverley is honestly not amusing anymore.

He falls in that grey area like so many on our team. I have no problem with our organization having depth and he is a decent guy to have in the system. It is the one-way deal (next year) that bugs me. I don't think he is a big enough upgrade over anyone to warrant the one-way deal. Yes we have some contracts expiring next year, but I don't think he is the upgrade we need over the players leaving (if they leave).

The thing I think you are overlooking here is that the Predators have seen significant improvement by Peverley over the past couple of years in the organization and are betting on him not having maxed out his potential. Personally, I think he is a late bloomer, a very cerebral player that continues to learn and is motivated enough internally to push himself to continue to improve physically. Hopefully, Rich takes this first year of the deal to continue to work on his defensive skill and adding strength and then in the second year he is able to step in and be a bottom six player in Nashville with enough offensive talent to be a short-term solution for the top-six (where he is better qualified than Fiddler).
