It more likely means Lilja is on the move. Somewhere out there theres an article where Holland boldly states Lilja was an insurance policy if they couldn't re-sign Stuart. Move him and we have space to lock down Chelios and Downey at about 750k and 475k respectively.

Hossa will not be sigend if he expects 7.5/8 mil a year.

Things get interesting if they both take a Datsyuk Deal [6.7 a year]

And really, they shouldn't sign all three. Meaning they shouldn't re-sign Hossa. They need to give some big minutes to Flip and Hudler eventually.

I have them at about 30k over if they carried both Ericsson and Lebda; and both Kopecky and Helm. I guess Ericsson will start in the AHL? They wouldn't carry 22 players that close to the cap. Devils fans remember what it's like to be jammed against the cap, when short term injuries hit it can be a nightmare.

Cleary got 2.8M per. Which I like, because Filppula and Cleary are more similar than people will admit.

Ericsson will STAY in the AHL. As will Helm.

I was just gonna say...moving Lilja makes a ton of sense with their young D's on the horizon and his salary, which is a decent amount to just be a bottom pairing D/PK specialist.

They can always dump Samuelsson for some cap relief as well, replacing his $1.2M with a $500K player will leave some room for injuries. But yes, Lebda or Lilja would have to be moved to bring Chelios back.

they wont dump Samuelsson, Babcock like his game..

Look for maybe Lilja to move. If they move a forward it may well be Hudler, as much as i would hate to see that happen.

The Wings have about 600k in change. The move Lilja and they have 1.85M in space, which they can use to for 2-3 depth signings.

They'd be beyond moronic to dump Sammy before Hudler. If they trade Lilja, then they bring up Meech full time which makes sammy expendable on the 2nd unit PP.

Decent deal. As others said, it's definitely a potential type deal. Even so, it's not an albatross.

I don't get to see Detroit very much during the regular season, but I was quite impressed by Filppula's play in the playoff games that I saw. Just another solid NHLer cranked out by Detroit's development system.

Like I said, he was an insurance policy. He can fill in fairly well as a #4, and I really have nothing wrong with the contract, but with Stuart re-signed, hes expendable, as Detroits big concern with losing BOTH Stuart and Lilja was the loss in the hitting department. With Stuarts long-term signing, and Kronwall's emergence, plus the possibility of adding Quincey who plays with an edge to the regular lineup really would equate to zero loss on the back-end.

totally agree..

it makes a lot of sense to move him. Now we just have to find a taker. What would the demand for him be?

I really like this deal for Detroit. Imagine how well Filpulla's deal will be in year 3 of the contract.

If your team is looking for a little bit of cap relief, convince the team to send Mule to the Habs for future considerations.

BTW;
Do you guys really want a 46 year old, Chelios who was scratched during the playoffs at $750,000 over 32 year old Lilja at 1.250 with one season left in his contract?
The Wings need one more forward under contract for a roster spot to be done.....I'm just going off of the numbers on NHLnumbers.com

Developing prospect or possibly a 2nd round pick?

i'd take a bag of pucks and a fried chicken sandwich atm..

i'm just wondering what teams would want to take him. Although he's on a very reasonable contract.
