From Barry at team 1040....

There's actually 6 teams interested at this moment and is waiting for that number to increase if he announces that he's coming back...He emphasizing a lot to the fact that teams are interested in moving pieces around to make room for Sundin.

And honestly, Gainey should concentrate in who teams will be willing to move instead of getting Sundin 'cause in the end you might be getting something interesting below value 'cause the other team's goal would be to accomodate Sundin .

The only team we'll know for sure who is not interested and won't be is Detroit.

Article in the National Post by Mark Spector: Sundin's Actions Suggest Buyer Beware

From the Article:
Quote:
Look at his main options:

z Vancouver, a team whose Stanley Cup chances are not markedly better than Toronto's, has made an obscene pitch at Sundin. He can tick off the boxes marked "money," "lifestyle," and "plenty of Swedish company in lineup."

z Montreal is plainly interested, and in the weaker Eastern Conference the Canadiens are a legitimate threat to make it to the Stanley Cup final - a fast, young and skilled team that Sundin could turn into a serious threat with the stroke of a pen, if he so chose.

z Toronto offers far less, though Sundin claims a fierce loyalty to the Leafs. So if finishing his career in blue and white is more important than ever hoisting Stanley, Toronto could scratch that itch.
The article was really an opinion piece, but worth reading I guess.

with JP making a point to mention that 6 teams are interested and that some might move pieces to get Sundin, it makes me think that he actually has a couple of teams he would like to go to. If he wanted to sign in Van and Mtl he already would have imo.

that talk about deciding to retire or not is to wait for the right opportunity.

Oh and I forgot....Barry in his interview said that August 1st was not true for the announcement if he retires or not AND/OR for the choice of his team.

August was what Barry said all along, chances are it will be in the first week of August but August 1st was NEVER mentioned and still is not true to this day for either announcement.....or so says Barry today...

J.P. Barry doesn't even know Sundin is signed, sealed delivered to the Canucks, weeks ago.

Rangers are in tough spot to be interested in him. Only guys they could move to make room for him are Drury, Gomez, Redden and Rozsival. They just acquired Redden, just re-signed Roszival and does Drury and Gomez have NTC? Even if they don't, the Rangers has to know that they won't get a fair value for either of them since they have to make room for Sundin? Teams will play that in their favor.

But true that there's other teams out there he's waiting on. Doesn't mean he won't end up here but doesn't seem like we're an obvious choice.

Drury has a NMC. They can't trade him without his consent/can't buy him out/can't waive him. If he doesn't want to go, they can do NOTHING about it.

Gomez has a limited NTC, he can't be traded to 3 teams. But what's the point of swapping Gomez for Sundin? #1 center for #1 center, sure you dump a huge long-term deal but you lose a center in his prime for someone nearly a decade older.

http://nhlscap.com/no_trade.htm

The ONLY way Sundin is a Ranger is he wants to sign for a MASSIVE discount in the 3 million or less range. They could trade Prucha at 1.6 M and Fritsche at 875 K for cap relief and could just barely fit him in at 3 M.

Thing is though that 3 of the teams in the speculated and rumored Rangers, Flyers and I'm guessing the Flames or Ottawa (no cap space available really) are all over the Cap!

1, I don't see him going out West so scratch Flames and Canucks.
2, Ottawa would be a bigger slap in the Leafs face than him going to Montreal.
3, Rangers and Flyers would get screwed over big time in trying to move players to provide space.

4, it is between Montreal and Toronto. Either he wants to win, or he wants to remain a Leaf.

So Sundin could just say "I'm not retiring. Thank you." on August 1st and not say what team he will sign with until a week before training camp....

Hey, this should give us so much more Sundin threads...yaaaayyyyyy....

BarryS losing it. One minute he says Sundin still giveN no indication YET, then two sentences later? He says he definitively will be in training camp !..

RED ALERT JP BARRY

''He's still taking his time, and he hasn't given us an indication or not if he's going to keep playing or not. You know, when he was speaking in Sweden about August, unfortunately a lot of people picked up 1st of August. He meant August. He meant sometime in August he would definitely decide because he'll definitely be in training camp.''

There's no contradiction at all. He's saying that his decision will definitely come in august because if he plays he'll definitely be at training camp. That's why his decision is coming definitely in august, one way or the other.

We interrupt this marathon for a special announcement.

Mats Sundin is undecided.

I repeat - Mats Sundin is undecided.

We now return you to your regulary scheduled madness.

No, go ask anyone fluent in english and they're not contradictory at all. The english language can be subtle like that and you don't need to spell out exactly what you mean because people can tell what you mean.

The because he'll definitely be in training camp part is conditional on the decision in the first part of the sentence. If sundin plays, he'll definitely be at training camp. We know this already because he said that already. Therefore his decision has to come in august, because if it came in sept, it would be impossible for him to be in training camp. It's redundant for barry to say, "he'll definitely decide in august because if he plays he'll definitely be in training camp."

I have this feeling Sundin already knows he wants to retire since the end of the season but he only wants to mess with everybody's mind while he enjoys his fishing on his ikea boat and eats his swedish meatballs.

Perhaps Minnesota is one of the teams interested...after the parrish buy out, they got quite a bit more cap room
