Just a random thought that popped into my head this morning - if Kovalchuk asks for a trade (which I personally don't think he will but some people do), would a Kovalchuk for Gaborik + something trade work?

That's a really good offer, although maybe a slight overpayment by San Jose.

I could see Chicago making an offer of Cam Barker, Jack Skille, and Robert Lang (for cap purposes).

If I were Doug Risebrough, I'd look for the biggest package of picks or prospects, not a rental play like Jay Bo. If you're going to rebuild, you actually want to rebuild, not just trade impending free agents.

Either way, it'd be the end of his tenure with the Wild if Gaborik doesn't resign, so if he wants to keep the job, he'll overpay for a long-term deal.

But thats the thing.

Why would Minny want to rebuild? If we are going to lose our franchise player, getting a guy like Bouw will hopefully counteract that.

And it's not like we are lacking young players. We have Sheppard, Koivu, Burns, Bouchard, Harding etc etc

I really like the Sharks/Wild deal! Maybe a Deal around Gaborik and Bouwmeester works too. But my offer from the Penguins would be

TO WILD:
Jordan Staal
Darryl Sydor
2nd Round Pick 2009

TO PENGUINS:
Marian Gaborik
Martin Skoula

I know Staal is only 19. But he would all but certain need to go back the other way in this trade. I think Staal can really develop into a great 2 way player, he already has great defensive skills something the Wild should like, given their defensive system. I think Tyler Kennedy could replace Staal, given he keeps improving. Sydor has asked for a trade, maybe he would be of some interest to the Wild bringing his expierence. Looking at their defense I think he should fit right in and play a good amount of their games. It has been said the Gaborik wants to play in a offensive minded system. He would surely be getting that playing in Pittsburgh along side guys like Crosby and Malkin (more than likely Crosby line mate). Along with his offensive skill, he would be bringing his defensive skills he picked up playing in Minnesota's system. I know he is a UFA in 2009, but if the Pens could get him under a new contract he would be a penguin for many years. Plus it would make them the front runners to sign him before July 1st. Martin Skoula would be a good addition to Pittsburgh's blue line giving them more depth. And in order to add Sydor the may have to move another defensmen.

Do you think Skoula coming back to Pittsburgh in the deal is fair? Or should it be a different defensmen or not one at all? Minnesota would have the cap space to sign staal long term next summer. I just think this trade would work out well for both teams.

Are you on peyote? Toronto has a better chance to win the cup than this trade ever being remotely considered!

Darryl Sydor.....

Exchange Sydor for Whitney, and make that 2nd a conditional 1st if he re-signs and it sounds reasonable actually.

My opinion on this thread so far.
The value is close, perhaps San Jose overpaying slightly.

However, there are at least three problems with this deal.

1st the Sharks gave up their 09 1st in the Boyle deal, however we have, 2 2nd rd picks. If Minny would accept 2 2nds than that is not an issue.

2nd, the Sharks have two top 6 RW, Cheechoo and Setoguchi and no prospects close to being top 6 RW (Couture is a center and McGinn is likely a 3rd line LW). Marian Gaborik is an elite RW far better than either Cheechoo or Seto, but he can't fill both spots. If another asset could be substituted for Setoguchi I would be all over this deal. Would Couture, Paveski, or Clowe be acceptable?

Something like:

Cheechoo, San Jose 2nd, Vancouver 2nd, Couture/Clowe/Pavelski for Gaborik

For San Jose they get an elite forward and build on McKellan and Wilson idea of team speed (Michalek, Marleau, Gaborik, Setoguchi can all flat out fly and Thornton moves well for a big guy).

Minnesota gets two gritty top 6 forwards with heart, and two picks (or a 2010 1st rd pick if they accepted it). San Jose would probably have to throw in another prospect

Obviously, this deal would occur after this season as San Jose has zero room for Gabby this year.

Which leads me to the third problem even if this deal is done next year, how the heck are the Sharks going to fit under the cap and still ice a deep team?

Michalek (4.333)-Thornton (7.2)-Gaborik (8.0)
Marleau (6.3)-Pavelski (1.6)-Setoguchi (1.247)
McGinn (1)-Mitchell (1.5)-Clowe (2.5)
Zalewski (.66)-Goc (1)-Grier (1.25)
Shelly (.75)

Boyle (6.667)-Lukowich (1.56)
Ehrhoff (3.1)-Vlasic (3)
Joslin (.516)-x(1)
x (.5)

Nabakov (5,375)
Greiss (.725)

total: 59.27- sure its under the cap, but I doubt the Sharks would go into the year with such a weak defense. The top 3 is solid, but it is a disaster after that.

Not really. Skoula will also be an UFA at the end of the year. The Penguins are gambling on two UFA for a UFA and then a RFA and a high draft pick? Basically a great player and a draft pick for nothing?

ok, I'll bite... but the Caps wouldn't even do this... since they like to grow their own players and add tactfully! Blockbuster trades usually gut the team getting the superstar player...

To Wild:
D-Patrick McNeil
RW-Francois Bouchard
D-Sasha Pokulok
2009 2nd round pick

To Capitals:
Marion Gaborik
