Isn't anyone worried Valabik=Kudroc?

Everyone is generally raving about Valabik and is saying 'the next Chara', but what about all those countless big guys who pop up every couple years that every one tags as 'the next Pronger/Chara' and they all fall flat. The player that pops to my mind is Kudroc. Everyone loved the guys size and intensity, but he still hasn't caught on...and I don't know if teams have given up on him developing more, but he seems like a bust. Will Valabik join that list? What makes him different than a Kudroc?

Valabik has some of the worst lateral movement I've seen. That's where you can beat him. All you have to do is get him to move laterally and you can get by him easily.

He is more skilled than Kudroc, which is why he'll most likely make the NHL, but his main problem is his skating. SPECIFICALLY his lateral movment, which is horrible.

Everything about Valabik screams useless thug / enforcer / bust to me.

Which probably means Nonis will draft him.

Well, no. Not everybody is saying he is the next Chara.

Who could blame him...

Everyone talks about needing a big crease clearing defenceman. He certainly fits that mold.

Of course, we don't actually need one, people seem to forget we do have a guy named Bryan Allen, but we won't bring that up here.

I think Nonis will draft some lazy, selfish, soft, unmotivated, flashy floater who couln't win a one on one battle along the boards even if his life depended on it. He'll fit right in with Rucinsky, Sanderson and Reid in Vancouver.

Why Reid? I've never heard anyone call him a floater.

Rucinsky and Sanderson are gone.

I think most people are projecting Valabik a little higher because of his toughness. He will fight anyone, so teams realize that even if he isn't a top 4 d-man skill/skating wise, he could still fill out the bottom part of a defensive unit and bring much needed size and toughness similar to a Hal Gill. Mezei and Kudroc don't have close to the grit and nastiness Boris has - and that's something NHL GM's really take into consideration.

In terms of skating though, it is a risk. Not every big guy 'develops' and improves his skating like Chara did. But Valabik does seem to have a similar work ethic and commitment to improve like Chara does, so that seems to be increasing his stock.

Have you not watched hockey in the last 2 seasons? Rucinsky is not a floater.

Or even worse, Valabik = Francois Leroux.

He better hope he isn't drafted by the Oilers.

So he's what, a gritty, hard working two way winger?

No, he's a defenceman. Also, btw Chara wasn't exactly graceful when he first got into the leauge. It wasn't until after his first year in Ottawa that he was nothing more than a big pylon for the faster player to just skate around. Though look at him now, he can actually move laterally and use his wide wing span to defend those faster players.

Has anyone noticed that Milbury has drafted all the big Slovakian defensemen that are being talked about in this thread?

Personally, I would rather that he NOT continue the trend.

I'm still comparing him to Dan Focht.

Big, tough, inconsistant as hell.

He's not a good skater, not good at recognizing and reacting to the play. 2 warning signs for an NHL defenseman.
