Rochester coaching options

The other thread got re-named for Amerk line combos, so this can be coach discussion. Here are some candidates:

Chuck Weber sounds like the obvious candidate, but I like Derek Laxdal too, he has a good rep.

Sorry about that - the other thread was taken off-topic with about a dozen posts about line combos and only about 3 on-topic posts about the coaching possibilities...so I just said "bag it" and renamed the thread.

Dave Baseggio, fired in April as coach of Peoria (AHL). Three years experience in the AHL as a head coach; two years in Peoria and one in Bridgeport. Broke into pro hockey as a player with the Amerks in 1989-90.

For what it's worth, Eklund is reporting that Baseggio is the leading candidate for the Rochester job.

Then I guess that means he's headed to the Asian leagues Seriously, GP - you know how worthwhile Eklund's predictions are. He almost never gets anything right, and even for what he gets right, if it doesn't happen within 48 hours, it doesn't happen at all.

So what was Baseggio's record in his three seasons behind the bench? That would be a more enticing point of conversation than what Eklund says on the matter.

I thought it amusing that Eklund now claims to have sources commenting on AHL Coaching Vacancies.

That would be hysterical. I watch Baseggio play with the Amerks. I was young, but I can't remember a player that was on his fanny more than Baseggio. He always seemed to be sitting on the ice. Funny what you remember about a player.

I would not be surprised if Ted Nolan was considered. The new Amerks owner/partner, Curt Styres is a Native American. I believe I've heard it said that he actually knew Nolan.

With the Islanders cutting Ted Nolan loose so late in the summer (after almost all of the coaching vacancies had been filled), and with Ted's previous experience in trying to get back into "big league" coaching, he may be willing to take an AHL job.

It's a slow news cycle - he has to make stuff up at a lower level to fill space and get those subscriptions to the paid portion of his website sold.

Anyone heard anything on the coaching search. It's been pretty quiet here for a week or two now.

Haha that would require Panther fans to stop bickering with eachover about the same subject and pay attention to the rest of the world.

And it would also require Panthers management to talk to the press and feed them information, which would require the Panthers' beat writers to come back from vacation.

i.e. there's no news in the last two weeks. Absolutely nada.

Haha perhaps the beat writers have finally learnt, any news they report on the Panthers is always bad news.

New policy, don't report Panthers news. These last two weeks have been sweet!

Obviously JM favors Biggane over GR since he's holding back making announcements while he's on vacation yet let GR go on vacation telling him he expected to make no signings during free agency only to sign Stillman when GR left.

By the way GR, taking vacation during the first week of the free agent signing period was not the smartest thing to do no matter what JM was telling you.

I e-mailed GR - says he's swamped with other assignments but he'll try to find out something in the next week.

GR says coach will be in place next week, JM didn't give any names.

Amerks Beat Writer Kevin Oklobzija seems pretty confident that the new coach will be Benoit Groulx, head coach of the Gatineau Olympiques (QMJHL). He lists a few other names in his blog but in the comments section he wrote today that he is almost positive that it's Benoit Groulx.

http://php.democratandchronicle.com/...p=132#comments

Rumor has it that Jason Cipolla would be retained as an assistant coach, with the Panthers kicking around the idea or hiring a 2nd asst.

Wow. Groulx has a GREAT reputation, not just in the Q, but in all of the CHL. Coached Gatineau to the Memorial Cup even though before the playoffs started nobody thought Gatineau was even one of the top four teams in the Q. Then was rewarded by being named Canada's HC for the WJC. Would be huge for the Amerks if they landed him.
