Connolly >>>>>> Laich

Why add insult to injury with the second rounder?

haha yeah that doesnt make sense. connollys way better the laich, make more sense if the second was going to buffalo. and im not sure how this meets anybodys needs considering wash has backstrom, nylander and federov at centre....and not to sure what laich would do in buffalo, probally just suck.

You know, you missed the perfect opportunity to make a "Buff/Wash" joke to go along with car wash and van wash... just sayin...

Caps don't do this. Laich is way too versatile and, oh yeah, he can play an entire season. Not to mention the deal would put the Caps over the cap.

82 game seasons for Connolly: 2
82 game seasons for Laich: 1

Look at the recent history though. Laich's a durable 20 goal scorer, Connolly isn't durable at all anymore (even if his talent is much higher).

And even with that, Connolly outscored Laich by 3 points last year, in 34 less games.

Doesn't make any sense for Buffalo to move him for that kind of return. Better to just gamble on Connolly remaining relatively healthy than trade him for Laich, let alone throw in a 2nd rounder.

That's true. Connolly is, hands down, the better offensive player. Laich brings something the Caps need for as many games as possible, though. Not to mention his cult following, which would totally dissolve if this were done.

conolly has the talent but can't stay healthy. laich seems like a heart and soul type guy for the caps who can score a decent amount as well. i see no reason why the caps should do this. As a sabres fan i would do it though.

If Connolly wasn't always injured Buffalo would never do this deal. However it's worth considering if the guy is never going to play over 40-50 games a year.

Yea, the trade doesn't work for either side, IMO.

I'm not trying to bash Laich, I like him. Makes no sense for the Caps or the Sabres. Its never a good idea to include a guy who's value is low (Connolly) in any trade proposals. Yet, people continue to do so. Such is life on HF boards

Connolly is the more talented player, but he's been up and down, and mostly due to his injury history. You can't count on him for 50 games.

Laich has less talent, but he's appreciating as an asset, is coming off a 20-goal year, and is signed for three years at a reasonable salary cap hit ($2.067M). This doesn't make sense from Washington's point of view.

Games played over the last five seasons:

2007-08 - Connolly: 48; Laich: 83
2006-07 - Connolly: 2; Laich: 73
2005-06 - Connolly: 63; Laich: 83 (73 NHL + 10 AHL)
2004-05 - Connolly: 16; Laich: 68
2003-04 - Connolly: 0; Laich: 68 (44 AHL Binghamton + 22 AHL Portland)

If you go back to 1999-2000, 2000-01, 2001-02 and 2002-03, you can find consecutive seasons in which Connolly played 80-82 games a year. At that point, he was an asset with significant value, but not anymore, not after the concussions.

It says something when 2007-08 is generally considered a successful year for Connolly, in health terms, and he still only managed to play 48 games.

I'm rooting for the guy, but I wouldn't want a health risk like that on my team, not at the expense of a guy who gives you reliable secondary scoring at a fixed salary for another three years.
