Heatley is locked up longterm and ready for a larger leadership role so I don't like this.

Minnesota gets screwed.

Big no.
Hrm my bad, I didn't notice Backstrom was UFA also. That does change things.

Anaheim doesn't shed enough salary but it seems like a pretty fair deal to me. This would require Minnesota to start a rebuild, though.

You don't think that's still a Minny playoff squad? Not sure of the actual positions/line combos, but:

Kunitz - Koivu - Bouchard
Pouliot - Sheppard - Brunette
Miettinen - Belanger - Nolan
Boogaard - Veilleux - Weller

Burns - Johnsson
Schultz - Zidlicky
Foster - Skoula
Bergeron

Harding
Gerber

With Minnesota's system, I think they can still reach the playoffs with that team. However, they can also always still sign someone for more offense OR package some of the picks/prospects they'll have for a true top-6 guy.

If Ottawa pulled the trigger on this trade the roster would be:

Vermette - Spezza - Alfredsson
Kelly - Fisher - Gaborik
McAmmond - Nikulin - Neil
Ruutu - Bass - Donovan

Phillips - Schneider
Volchenkov - Meszaros
Smith - Lee

Backstrom
Auld

Nice, but we wouldn't be able to re-sign Mezzy since we are taking on an excess of 5+ million salary and we need another top 6 forward desperately

very good except Anaheim has to give up more to Ottawa or else it doesnt happen but Minny might not say yes so they can keep Backstrom but do have Harding u never know with Minnesota and trading their goalies Ducks give up Getzlaf or Perry instead of kunitz or add a good prospect or rostre player

Compared to Heatley then Gaborik is glass. He has played 3 82 game seasons, been in a car crash that should have killed him, had a puck hit him in the eye that should have blinded him and when he seperated his shoulder last season he was supposed to be out for 2 months but came back in a few weeks.

i think ottawa does this without a second thought backstrom is better than gerber and gaber Gabrorik is almost as good as heatley but Foligno and a 2nd for Schneider i think thats a steal other than the salary they pickup

Ducks accept if their next two 1st rounders are not involved

Minnesota only accepts with the two 1st rounders and the 2nd and start a rebuild with four first round picks in the next two seasons

Ottawa can't fit an extra $5.2 mil under our cap.

Ottawa will have a hard time signing Gaborik after this season for less than Heatley makes. This makes the cap next year equally dicey.

Ottawa is trading 2 players who can be on our team for a long time (6+ years) for 3 UFA's to be.

So while talent wise Ottawa may be doing ok (I don't feel like arguing this), we are getting destroyed cap wise and contract wise on this deal. So their is no way in hell that Ottawa does this trade.

No thanks from Ottawa.

Heatley signed at 7 years >>> Gaborik for 1 year

Then again, Heatley > Gaborik anyways.

I'd rather wait until the summer for Backstrom to be UFA if we were going to go after him.

3 ufa's and $5mil in salaries for Dany Heatley +

do the sens at least get a reach around?

Not to mention you tear Minnesota apart. This is why three way trades never work, you always end up pissing off two fanbases.

And Gaborik played the playoffs with a sports hernia and an injured...groin I think. He had multiple injures by the time they played Anaheim in 02-03. He also went back too early when he injured his groin thus why he had to sit out earlier than he was suppose to.

When I think of glass players I think of Havlat and his numerous injuries.

Anaheim only gets Dany Heatley in this deal and gives away 2 really good players, I don't think they do this.

And 2 first rounders to boot, seems a bit high for Heatley.

From an Ottawa perspective, there's no point in trading Heatley for 3 UFA's. If we can keep Heatley and manage to sign any one of those guys when they go UFA, we'll be far better off.

I get the feeling that Minnesota actually wins this deal. Getting 2 1sts, a 2nd rounder, 2 first round draftees, a decent Defensive prospect, and a replacement for Backstrom is a pretty good return for just 2 UFA's.

Valuewise, I think it's pretty fair, however from Ottawa's POV, a Heater with a long term contract is infinitely more valuable than a year of Gaborik, Backstrom and Schneider, not to mention the loss of Foligno and a 2nd. If Backstrom and Gaborik were signed to long term deals at their current contract, it'd be a solid move for Ottawa, but as mentioned before, if Gaborik were signed long term, he wouldn't be 'available'...Then again, Heatley isn't available and he's still involved in this hypothetical trade.

Forsberg is made of solid steel. Unfortunately steel is heavy and they made his foot out of balsa wood so his achilles heel is his achilles heal.
