This is a very good question, a lot of you already said answers that I was thinking of. A name that hasn't been mentioned would be:

Luc Robitaille - coming off 8 straight 40+ goal seasons (not including shorten season) and then he comes to the Rangers.

Ulf Samuelsson - Loved the guy, never thought the Rangers would get him.

Pat LaFontaine - Thought he was an Islander/Sabre for life.

I never thought that in one season Glen Sather would acquire the player I hated most from the three teams I hate the most, but he did. Eric Lindros, Bobby Holik and Darius Kasparaitis. Let's not forget about Scott Gomez, either.

Yeah, if we could stop acquiring players that I've spent years despising, that would be great.

Never really been shocked by any of the free agents like Gretz or the trades like Lindros, Bure, Jagr.

Though I always thought Mario would be a Ranger when he was 40

Easily Lindros.

If you told me in '95 that we would have a 28 year old Lindros on the Rangers I probably would have died of shock.

absolutely Lindros. never imagined Clarke would have traded him within the division after their falling out. plus hated him so much especially after he knocked us out in 97. Pilon is another good one, dude seemed like an Islander for life. I won't list Jagr or Bure because with those 2 they were rumored to the Rangers long before they were dealt there. Funny thing is the Rangers dropped the ball twice with them. Bure seemed headed to the Ranger for sure until for some reason Smith didn't follow through and the Panthers stepped up and nabbed him. and with Jagr Sather decided to play games with the Pens, and the Caps stepped up and nabbed him. Gretzky was surprising too, cause you figured he would finish his career out in LA, was a huge shock when he went to the Blues. Him signing with the Rangers that summer wasn't that shocking...

Gretzky, Lindros, Bure... Never expected them to become Rangers... and in the future, AO, Crosby, Malkin, Nash... figure maybe since I never expected the rest, maybe we'll get these guys too... <insert evil laugh here>

It really depends on the age.

If you told me we had a 30+ year old Gretzky, Jagr, Lafontaine, or even Bure on the team I don't think that would have surprised me at all. But Lindros still in his prime years, I would have thought the world was more likely to end before that happened.

Lindros.

But I hated the deal... I dialed back my interest in the Rangers, and hockey in general for years after that deal went down. How could such a hated rival suit up in blue? Would it not burn his skin off? Lindros was and is a Flyer.

I'm almost glad I quit the team for awhile, they went nowhere.

In the January of 98, Smith has refused to include Manny Malhotra in the deal. Manny was the last piece.
