Rangers Assistant Coach Pelino Visits Omsk

Per Beyond the Blueshirts:

Quote:
A surprising guest was on hand today as Avangard Omsk held a light-hearted inter-squad game as part of their final preparations for the start of the KHL season on Wednesday. The man spotted sitting in the stands with Omsk head coach Sergei Gersonski and general manager Anatoli Bardin was none other than New York Rangers assistant coach Mike Pelino. Pelino was joined by a translator, and explained his presence in Omsk to Oleg Malitsky of Championat.ru. “The purpose of my visit is to become acquainted with the systems of the Avangard hockey club and support the relationship between our clubs. I have spent some time here and must say that I am very impressed with everything I’ve seen. The hockey operations in Omsk are first class. The arena, infrastructure, organization… We with the Rangers would very much like to maintain close contact with Avangard.

That is good news. It is ideal that the teams have a good relationship so that Cherepanov can come over smoothly without Omsk being angry.

I think Jeff Finger's contract is more exciting than this article.

4 year deal worth $3.5 million per season, he must have some dirt on the owner.

Can't hurt to show Chere the Rangers are serious about him coming to the US after his season is done.

Eh, I'm a little wary of this, if only because of the failed Howard Baldwin/CSKA Moscow experiment.

Trust me, if you haven't seen this its worth a read.

Looks like the Rangers and Omsk are following through with their "relationship."

It is not a bad move.

While the NHL is at war with the KHL, and all the controversy with Russian players returning to Russia or coming over to North America while under contract... here are the Rangers and Omsk forming a relationship.

Be it for each of their own selfish needs, it is still a good move for both parties.

Let the rest of both leagues squabble over spilled milk.

Rangers and Omsk will have a "you scratch my back, i scratch yours" relationship.

That story is almost a decade old. A lot has changed in Russia since the late 90s.

Completely agree. If the Rangers have a good relationship with at least one KHL team while the rest of the leagues are at odds, that can only help. From the way it's looking, they won't cry over Chere leaving just so long as he finishes out his current contract, which is totally legit.

I had questions at the time and reading this only makes me think there's a real chance that there's been a gentlemen's agreement between the two clubs regarding Jagr and Cherepanov. I mean is it really that hard to imagine that Glen and the Omsk GM agreed that we wouldn't put up a serious fight for Jags this past offseason if they don't try to keep Cherry next? (Heck, given the affection he's often displayed for Omsk, Jags may even have been a party to such an agreement!)

Anyhoo - regardless of whether my conspiracy theory is right, there's no question that it's a good sign that Pelino is over there.

Cherepanov + Jagr is not a bad thing. So long as it's just for this year.

More on the partnership between the two teams, from Omsk GM Anatoli Bardin:

Quote:
“The first step of our mutual friendship is the arrival of Pelino in Omsk,” explained Bardin, revealing that Pelino’s trip will last five days. “We will conduct a joint seminar; Mike will interact with our coaches. The Rangers coach will go with us to Kazan [for Omsk's season opener on Wednesday] and will watch the game with AK Bars. And then he will return to America via Moscow.”

Bardin elaborated on plans for future cooperation between the two teams. “When the KHL season ends, we will send one or two of our coaches to New York. Our coaches will be waiting there in June, when prospect camp opens. It seems the Americans would like for the Avangard coaches to train the Rangers youth.” Bardin continued, revealing plans for a further exchange of personnel and a possible youth tournament. “In the near future the Rangers doctor will come to us for a week. We will also exchange children’s teams.”
